Customers may be judging your business by its toilets. According to Bradley Corp.’s 10th Annual Healthy Hand Washing Survey, 52 percent of American customers “definitely” or “probably” would spend more money at a business with clean, well-maintained restrooms, reports QSR Magazine.

Further, the study found that 64 percent of customers consciously choose a business based on its superior restrooms. This makes a lot of sense, considering the study found that public restrooms are used for a variety of purposes—nearly half of adults polled said they pop into the restroom to check how they look; 27 percent use them to avoid someone, cry, hide or take a mental health break; and 25 percent use the restroom to catch up with their phones.

The study showed that the biggest frustrations Americans encounter in sub-par restrooms are clogged or unflushed toilets, empty or jammed toilet paper dispensers and faulty latches on stall doors.

“The state of a restroom can have a measurable effect on the health of a business,” said Jon Dommisse, director of strategy and corporate development for Bradley Corp., according to QSR.
