As demand for senior care services accelerates across South Florida, Comfort Keepers® is turning its focus to Miami-Dade County, where a growing senior population and a limited supply of in-home care providers have created room for new franchise development.
Florida has long attracted retirees. There’s no secret there. But Miami stands out as a market that remains comparatively open for Comfort Keepers, nonetheless. The brand already operates successful locations across the state – and yet much of Miami-Dade remains uncharted territory. “Miami is one of the last major markets for us with six or seven open territories,” said Comfort Keepers Vice President of Franchise Development Scott Oaks. “For us, it’s really filling a gap in a state where there has long been tremendous opportunity.”
Population Growth Fuels Demand
Over the last several years, Florida has experienced a population shift. That activity has intensified the already strong need for in-home care. An influx of older adults continually relocating to Florida has grown the over 65 demographic (particularly in lifestyle-driven markets like Miami).
In nearly two-thirds of Florida’s 67 counties, one out of every four residents is over the age of 65. In Miami-Dade, the over-65 demographic accounts for nearly 20% of total residents.
That growth has outpaced the availability of home care services. That, in turn, has created favorable conditions for franchise expansion. In Florida, and Miami in particular, demand continues to exceed supply. It’s a dynamic Comfort Keepers sees as sustainable rather than cyclical.
Miami’s appeal to seniors goes beyond weather and geography. Many of those relocating are doing so independently. That type of distance and separation frequently becomes a catalyst for professional care. “Often, adult children are more than a drive away. It could require a plane ride,” Oaks said. “That separation drives demand for home care services so families can ensure their loved ones are properly cared for.”
Aging in Place Shapes the Market
Seniors, in general, are increasingly reluctant to embrace institutional care models. Aging in place is the preferred option for many reasons, ranging from dignity to preservation of routine. This is especially true for those who’ve chosen such an active location as a long-term home. “When they relocate to a city like Miami, they’re not moving to a facility. They want a place of their own,” Oaks said. “Home care allows them to remain in their own place, where they feel comfortable and safe, for a significantly longer period than if they were trying to manage on their own.”
In a competitive home care landscape, Comfort Keepers positions itself around quality of life, not just task completion. The brand’s caregiving model is predicated upon engagement and personal connection. That enables Comfort Keepers to tailor care to each individual's needs and interests. “We do focus on creating a safe environment. But we go beyond physical needs to ensure our clients experience connection, purpose and a daily dose of joy,” Oaks said. “We aim to make the caregiver visit the best part of that client’s day.”
Franchisee Opportunities in Miami
Entering a high-demand market can be complex. But Comfort Keepers provides hands-on support from the signing of the franchise agreement through the grand opening. This includes guidance through what can often be complicated local licensing requirements.
Opportunities for further franchise development remain widespread across Miami-Dade County (including areas like Kendall, Miami Beach, Homestead and the Florida Keys). With demand expected to continue to rise alongside Florida’s senior population, Comfort Keepers views this current window as urgent.
“Seniors will continue migrating to the state, which creates more demand. So, now is a great time because of the open territories,” Oaks said. “Outside of our existing franchisee areas, there are many territories with strong demographics. But they may not be available two years from now.”
