His grandfather worked as a tile setter in the 1950s. His father sold carpet, and his uncle owned a flooring business in St. Charles. What do you want us to know?Dan Yangas: When I was quite young — in high school and college — I did a lot of flooring installation on weekends and during breaks. It was something I always enjoyed, but I got away from it after I graduated. I went into sales and spent most of my career in other industries. I was in the paper industry for about 25 years, in various sales roles, and then spent the last five years in security. Still, flooring was always something I loved. I did a lot of the floors in my own home and helped friends out with theirs.When this opportunity came along, it felt like a perfect fit. I’d been looking at franchising for a couple of years, and this combined what I enjoy with what I was looking to do for the rest of my career.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Dan: I worked for both distributors and manufacturers, many of them quite large. I was looking for a way to work for myself and be responsible for my own decisions. Over the years, I answered to shareholders and executives, and I didn’t always agree with the decisions that were made. I often felt like what was best for the customer wasn’t always what got prioritized.I wanted to work for myself but never quite pulled the trigger. There was always another opportunity to work for someone else. Eventually, I decided it was time to take control and do something on my own.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Dan: When people hear “franchising,” they usually think of fast food, and that definitely wasn’t what I was looking for. I didn’t want to manage a fast-food restaurant. I was shown all kinds of opportunities — from vending machines to elder care placement — and it opened my eyes to the range of franchises out there.I worked with a franchise consultant for a couple of years and looked at quite a few options. When Footprints Floors came along, it didn’t feel like a typical franchise. They’d done all the footwork and laid the foundation, so I could focus on what I do best — meeting with customers, performing estimates and managing crews.They had a system in place for the day-to-day operations. I probably wouldn’t have been able to build something like this on my own — especially the business side. I’d always worked for other people and never had to handle P&amp;L or backend logistics. That structure and support made a big difference.1851: What made you pick this brand? My father sold carpet. My grandfather was a tile setter in the '50s and '60s. My great-grandfather owned a flooring store in Chicago. My uncle owned one in St. Charles. Some franchises sound great but require big upfront investments or high overhead. Be sure it's something you actually want to do and that you’ll enjoy doing. Making money isn’t everything — if the day-to-day is worse than your old job, it’s not worth it.Ask yourself if the hours and lifestyle make sense. I looked at around 20 different franchises over the course of a couple of years, and at times it felt frustrating. What do you want us to know?Pratham Patel:&nbsp;I’m 24 years old and graduated from Georgia Tech in May 2023 with a degree in computer science. Georgia Tech’s CS program is consistently ranked among the best in the country, and it really shaped the way I think — analytically, strategically, and with a long-term mindset. After graduation, I worked a couple of corporate roles in Atlanta before ultimately moving back home to Warner Robins.I come from a very business-oriented family background, primarily in retail — liquor stores, gas stations, and similar ventures — so entrepreneurship has always been around me. This is my first time stepping into the food and beverage industry on my own, and it’s a new challenge I’m excited to take on. Having lived here my entire life, I know the community and the market inside and out, which gives me a strong foundation as I build something here.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Patel:&nbsp;In my first role, I worked on implementing advanced business analytics strategies for a mobile ordering platform widely used in the hospitality industry. After that, I joined Boeing as a systems data analyst supporting the C-17 program here in my hometown. When I experienced a layoff at Boeing, it forced me to take a step back and really think about what I wanted long term. That’s when I realized I’d always wanted to build something of my own — just like my parents did.I knew stepping into business ownership wouldn’t be easy, especially as a first-time operator. Building a concept entirely from scratch is challenging and requires constant innovation. What attracted me to the franchise model was the structure — the framework is already proven, and the concept has been tested. My job is to execute it at a high level. I bring youthful energy and creative thinking to the table, but having that established foundation gave me the confidence to take the leap.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Patel:&nbsp;Before going through this process, I didn’t really understand what franchising actually provides. I had a pretty negative perception — I assumed it was mostly about high royalty fees with limited support in return. They see it as an investment in you as an operator, not just a transaction.When I began this journey, I had no experience negotiating leases, navigating tenant improvement allowances, or running food and hospitality operations. He helped prepare me for every stage of the process, and because of that guidance, I now feel extremely confident handling complex lease negotiations and development decisions. For my location in Warner Robins, I’m investing in a high-tech AV system and a modern lighting package, which no other location has ever done before. I also looked at one of their best-performing locations in California and saw how they utilized their patio and interior design. I’m taking elements from that success to build something new here.&nbsp;Long term, I’m focused on growth. Once we’re fully operational and have achieved great success, I plan to explore opening additional locations across the Southeast, with markets like Charlotte and Miami already on my radar. My goal is to position The Brass Tap as a leading name in the bar and nightlife scene, on par with the biggest players in the region.Looking ahead, I also have a vision of developing rooftop concepts and creating locations connected to sports-driven facilities, including pickleball, to bring together nightlife, community, and active lifestyle experiences under one brand.1851:&nbsp;Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Patel:&nbsp;I don’t view this as just a business investment — I see it as an investment in the community that raised me. Giving back to this city is deeply important to me, and community involvement is a core part of my vision for The Brass Tap. After that, I was involved in a home renovations business with my brother, which eventually grew to serve all of Ontario and Alberta. Around 2009, the recession led to a shift in that home renovations business, so I decided to pursue a different direction. We are also heavily involved in charity events, including the annual&nbsp;Movers for Moms initiative, and for the last five or six years, we have coordinated Christmas shoebox deliveries for women in shelters and in abusive relationships across Toronto.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Bailey:&nbsp;New owners must be ready to work hard and stay closely involved in the business, especially in the early stages. I have always believed in being available when needed, and I still share my cell phone number for direct contact. Being her support team is an example of exactly what Griswold is about.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?DuBose:&nbsp;I spent almost 30 years in human resources across a wild range of industries, everything from timber processing and meatpacking to my last role in the "clean and conscious" beauty space.I'd always thought about maybe starting a business of my own, but the moment actually kind of came through volunteering. I went through rookie school to become a volunteer firefighter at age 50. While out on calls, I kept seeing seniors struggling with falls, welfare checks and other situations where they simply needed help. I looked at various service brands, but home care was the only thing that touched me personally.1851: What was your perception of franchising before becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?DuBose:&nbsp;I don’t think a lot of people realize that two out of three businesses they pass on the road are actually franchises. I knew I wanted to build something, but I didn’t necessarily have a unique idea in mind. Franchising offered a proven system I could get behind.Now that I’m in it, I realize how much the new owner perspective matters. During my research, I specifically asked to talk to people who had been in business for less than six months.
