Fast Casual: Florida Restaurants Prep for Hurricane Matthew

Many Florida restaurants are closing up shop to prepare for Hurricane Matthew.

Disaster officials are warning citizens that Hurricane Matthew is a storm of deadly strength. According to a recent Fast Casual article, restaurants in and near Florida are preparing for what is being called the fiercest storm in 10 years to hit South Florida.

The projected Category 4 hurricane is expected to hit Florida’s east coast today with winds up to 75 mph. As many civilians are evacuating the area, restaurants are taking precautions as well and preparing for the worst.

Firehouse Subs, which is based in Jacksonville, will be closing several locations along with its headquarters today to prepare.

"We are trying to balance being a support system as usual and trying to help everyone prepare," said Cecily Sorensen, the brand’s VP of corporate communications. "Info has been sketchy and uncertain and we get updates constantly."

While many restaurants are closing, believe it or not there are operators that plan to continue to stay open and ride out the storm. At least 28 Florida brands including Waffle House want to stay open as long as they can to deliver and offer food to those in need.
