Well-known pizza brand Domino’s is targeting a footprint expansion translating to 25,000 total units by 2025, according to an article on CNBC. According to the article, CEO Ritch Allison said, “It’s all part of our strategy to fortress the markets that we operate in, which brings a lot of benefits. [...] We have to bring these territories down tighter to accomplish our objectives and to protect ourselves against this new emerging set of competitors.”

The announcement comes on the same day that Nation’s Restaurant News reported that same-store sales growth for the world’s second largest pizzeria chain slowed in Q1 of this year: “3.9% gain capped a 32-quarter growth streak, but was the smallest increase in more than three years,” the article said.

Domino’s aggressive growth plan would translate to “nearly 10,000 more locations in addition to its existing pizza joints in more than 85 markets,” according to CNBC. That growth, it should be noted, is planned without the help of third-party delivery services despite their increasing encroachment in the QSR space. “As more brands like McDonald’s, Starbucks and Chipotle partner with third-party delivery services to grow their customer bases, Domino’s is determined not to outsource to platforms such as Uber Eats and DoorDash,” the article said.
