Here’s what she had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Misty Ball:&nbsp;The first time I started working here was back in 2006. I had just left a different serving job and was looking to try something new. I was about 20 years old and worked here for around four months before my mom, sister and I purchased a small-town café. I left to focus on that for a while.I came back in 2013 and started working part-time on weekends and nights while still helping at the café. In 2015, there was a change in management here. A new manager came in — he had never worked for the brand before and wasn’t from Minnesota; he was from California. At the time, I was doing some supervising work, and he asked if I had ever considered going full-time as a manager.I told him I was already working 40 hours a week serving and had three kids at home, but I figured why not? I went home and talked to my husband, and we decided to give it a try. It was a big change in my schedule. When I was serving, I worked in the evenings, but as a salaried manager, I had to be in earlier, around 2 p.m., which meant we had to figure out child care.Eventually, it worked out. For a while, I worked mostly night shifts and weekends since we had a GM covering the day shifts. As my kids got older, we decided to homeschool them because I hated not seeing them all day. I really liked the job, so homeschooling allowed us to make it work.In 2017, I became the GM. We’re still homeschooling, and I’ve been doing the same thing ever since.1851 Franchise: How did you decide franchising made sense for you?Ball:&nbsp;To be honest, it’s always been in the back of my mind. The current owner sold the Duluth store about five or six years ago to the GM who had worked there for around 12 years — about the same amount of time I’ve been here. So it was always something I thought about.Around March of last year, he and I had one of our regular sit-downs when he came to the store. He said, “I think I’m almost ready to retire. I’m just not sure what I’m going to do. Would it be something you’re interested in taking over?” I said, “Yeah, I think so.” I’ve been here a long time. I know the business and the franchise, and I felt like it was something I’d like to do.I had just turned 40 and thought: Why not go for it? Initially, he said it would probably be three or four years down the road, but he ended up fast-tracking it. It’s only been a little over a year since that conversation.I went home and talked to my husband and kids. One of my daughters works here now, and the others are a few years away from being old enough. We love the food, we love the business, and it just felt like the right move.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee?Ball:&nbsp;My husband and I had always talked about owning our own business — not necessarily franchising, but something of our own. We’ve always loved pizza. We make it at home all the time, and anytime we find a new pizza place, we stop and try it. So we talked about maybe opening something like that, or even a food truck.But the timing was never right. Once our kids started getting a little older, we started thinking about it more seriously — then 2020 happened, and everything got flipped upside down. It just wasn’t the right time back then.1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Ball:&nbsp;It is something I’m very passionate about. I love Famous Dave’s. I love the fact that so much of the food is homemade. We’re the ones who smoke all the meats, and a lot is expected of our managers to make sure everything comes out perfectly.Our side dishes are homemade, too. In today’s world, that’s rare. A lot of restaurants just throw things in the microwave, but here, we take pride in the quality of our food — and I’m very passionate about that.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Ball:&nbsp;That’s not something I’ve thought too much about yet. I figured we’d start with this one. But if it goes well, I’m not opposed to doing more in the future. Like I mentioned, my kids love this place. One of my daughters had a softball coach ask her, “Don’t you get sick of barbecue?” And she said, “Nope, never.” After eating it for so many years, you just don’t get sick of it.Opening more locations is something I’d definitely consider in the future. But for now, we’re just focusing on this location.1851:&nbsp;Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Ball:&nbsp;Back in 2012, I had three kids, and my husband and I decided to expand our family — we had another in 2019 and one more in 2021. My boss was always very supportive. He let me take time off and adjusted my schedule when I needed it.This job has allowed me to be there for my family. I’ve never had to miss any of my kids’ events — sports, activities, anything — because of work. That’s always meant a lot to me. If I ever needed help, my team — whether it was cooks, servers or supervisors — was always willing to step up.I also recently took on a new role as a varsity softball coach. We just started a few weeks ago. Originally, the plan was for me to take over the restaurant in July, but they pushed it forward to April. I had to think seriously about whether I could manage both for about six weeks. I talked to my staff and asked if they’d be on board with me needing to leave a couple days a week at 2:00 instead of 4:00, and everyone supported me right away.My family has been incredibly supportive, too. My husband helps with homeschooling the kids and has stayed home with the little ones. Now, with me taking over the business, he’s planning to help in any way he can — cooking, catering, doing outdoor and indoor maintenance. It’s been amazing to have that kind of support system.1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Ball:&nbsp;I’ve always been the type of person to go all in. Try it — and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. You can try something else. But you’re never going to know unless you give it a shot. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. You only have to look at my credit card bill to see what a big industry kids' sports is — I've got two kids obsessed with them. Now that I'm married, have kids, lead Cub Scouts, coach sports teams, and everything else, I just don't have as much time as I used to. I’ve heard some horror stories about other franchises, and every time I say to myself, “That hasn’t been my experience at all.”&nbsp;1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. Painting seemed like the right fit.1851:&nbsp;How did you decide franchising made sense for you?Joe: My dad instilled an entrepreneurial spirit in me and my two older sisters. He gets excited about business ideas. And I share that to some degree. I was a consultant with one of the large privately owned consulting firms in the Washington, D.C., area and throughout the country. I did general consulting, but my primary focus was on national security, physical security and personnel security. I worked there for 24 years.Back in June 2025, because of everything going on with the economy and the administration, my firm had to cut $5 billion worth of contracts. My primary contract was one of those that had to be cut, so I lost my job with them after 24 years. Prior to that, I served in the Army.I was a military police captain stationed in Germany, where I served as a military police chief. I oversaw three communities, supporting military personnel, their spouses and children. After losing my job, I knew I was going to get a pretty healthy sum from my pension. I said, “Well, I’m too young to stop working.” So I started looking at franchises. I told Joe — we talk every day — and he said he wanted to go in with me. That’s how we got started. Losing my job at the consulting firm was the trigger.Joseph Jones: Like Ike said, he came to me with the idea that he wanted to look at some franchises. I have a telecommunications background, a degree in international business, and I’m also a disabled veteran. I’ve been transitioning from the telecommunications industry and wanted to do something that allowed me to help the community. Helping people has always been a part of my life. When Ike came to me with the idea, I jumped on it.I thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community and help people. Also, with the economy declining, I wanted a backup plan in case my company faced layoffs. This community has given me so much, and we want to pay that forward. One of our goals is to create an apprenticeship program for young people, teaching them how to paint and helping them find jobs. There’s so much work out there, and if a young man or woman wants to learn a trade, we can train them. He’s always had a business mind, so when he said he wanted to go in with me, it was a no-brainer. He has sales and communication experience, and I knew our skills would complement each other. I probably feel more comfortable going into business with him than I would on my own because I know what he brings to the table.Our ideas about helping the community align perfectly. Both of us were raised in the Baptist church, and our faith plays a big role in who we are. I feel a deep sense of gratitude and confidence that we’re going to be successful because of that foundation. When I lost my job, a lot of people might have felt stressed or uncertain, but I felt calm. I knew it was time to step out and do my own thing. That’s how we got here.Jones:&nbsp;One thing I’ve learned in life is that challenges can become opportunities. What feels like a setback is often just an opportunity waiting around the corner. It’s all about how you respond. If the situation had been reversed, I know Ike would have been there for me too. I know how he thinks — he’s detail-oriented, punctual, and gives 110% to everything he does.
