A decade ago, childhood friends Robert Maynard and Brian Burchill balked at the idea of the greasy-spoon breakfast restaurant. They found that most of the food was frozen or processed, the customer service was subpar and employees worked too much for too little. So in 2005, the duo devised a solution&#8212;a gourmet breakfast and brunch brand that would serve fresh food made daily, make every server responsible for every guest and offer specialty items like lobster&#8212;and lots of it. After opening in Huntsville, North Carolina, and ultimately moving to a larger storefront in nearby Davidson, their restaurant took off. With the help of franchisee Patrick McNamara, Famous Toastery recently opened its newest location in a prime Charlotte real estate location&#8212;right across the street from the University of North Carolina&#8217;s campus. &#8220;Right now, our focus is taking care of the Charlotte market, but not overbuilding it. We want to be methodical with our expansion, and put each new restaurant in a place where there&#8217;s not only an unmet demand, but also tons of daytime foot traffic,&#8221; Maynard said. &#8220;By putting a restaurant near the University of North Carolina&#8217;s campus, we&#8217;re opening up our brand to a wide demographic by moving into this location. Not only are we targeting thousands of college students, but there are also dozens of Fortune 500 companies in the area. The need for an offering like Famous Toastery is there.&#8221; By the end of 2016, Maynard expects to have 10 locations across the greater Charlotte market. Corporate currently has three stores geared up for opening&#8212;one of which will be placed in the heart of the city&#8217;s downtown. Famous Toastery is targeting adjoining markets, too. Cities like Hickory, Salsbury and Greensboro, North Carolina are all open for development. &#8220;Charlotte is an incredible city. The downtown is great, the people are great and they know good food. We owe a lot of our success to the loyalty of North Carolina residents&#8212;they helped us grow our brand from a small restaurant to a fast-growing franchise that&#8217;s consistently recognized as the best in the segment,&#8221; Maynard said. &#8220;Famous Toastery is a different kind of brunch experience, and Charlotte has appreciated that from the very beginning.
