For Whitman, this shift marked a return to something he found missing in corporate America — meaningful work with a real impact.<h3>A Strategic Transition</h3>After leaving the Navy in 2002, Whitman spent more than two decades working in operations and manufacturing, holding executive roles in the defense contracting and semiconductor manufacturing industries. Despite reaching the top of his field, he found his corporate roles lacking in personal fulfillment.“I spent 22 years climbing the corporate ladder and when I got to the top rung, it wasn't that satisfying, and they were very demanding roles,” said Whitman. “There wasn’t a lot of reward, not just financially, but also just professionally. In some of these roles, it became just something I wasn't enjoying as much as I wanted to, and decided that I would like to do something else — working for myself.”Whitman began researching franchise opportunities and found Filta to be the standout among the hundreds of options. The business model’s value-added services, such as fryer management and oil recycling, resonated with Whitman.&nbsp;“It was easy for me to understand the value proposition, which became very clear and even more compelling the more I did my due diligence,” he said. “I thought that my background experience coupled with this opportunity made the most sense, and so I decided to go off and pursue it.”<h3>Veteran Skills at Work</h3>Whitman credits much of his success in franchising to his Navy background. As a former helicopter pilot and officer, he honed skills like discipline, attention to detail and team building — qualities that have translated seamlessly to running a Filta franchise.“In the Navy, we were focused on process, safety, and execution — those are key elements of operating a Filta business, as well,” he said. “It’s not technically complicated work, but it’s very detail-oriented. If you don’t follow the process, things can get messy and dangerous quickly.”His leadership style also draws on military principles. Whitman emphasizes the importance of building a strong, cohesive team. “You have to get work done through people, and that requires camaraderie and shared ownership,” he said.<h3>The Appeal of Filta</h3>So, why Filta? Whitman was particularly attracted to Filta’s business model because it offered stability in uncertain times.&nbsp;“We take on the worst job in the kitchen — cleaning fryers — and provide a service that is always needed,” he said. “Most of my business isn’t actually built around restaurants; we also service hospitals, schools and major businesses, which stay open even in the worst of times.”Whitman’s move to franchising wasn’t just about financial gain. He wanted to find a business that offered a better work-life balance than the corporate world. What began as a single-territory investment quickly grew into a multi-territory operation. Whitman’s territories now cover the entire state of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts. And looking ahead, Whitman sees even more expansion potential.&nbsp;“I want to grow and compete and expand — which I've done my entire life,” he said. “The opportunity to take on that second and third territory just seemed like the right thing to do. Would I want to go further? Absolutely. I’m very excited to expand the footprint.”<h3>Advice for Veterans Considering Franchising&nbsp;</h3>For veterans considering entrepreneurship, Whitman’s advice is to take the leap.&nbsp;“I think veterans bring that understanding of process, that discipline in their daily routine and expectations, and a competitive spirit to win,” he said. “When you combine that with a team-focused mentality, you have all the core elements needed to be successful in a Filta franchise.
