After 35 years running a successful global calcium supplement business, Jason and Stacy DeWitt were ready for a new challenge. They sold part of their company, took a few months off, and started thinking about what was next. That’s when they came across the opportunity to buy a Filta Environmental Kitchen Solutions franchise in Reno, Nevada.

“We have a daughter who's in high school, and we knew we wanted to get another business, grow it and work for another 10 years.” Jason said. “So we took about three months off and just got the house in order, did a lot of things we never got to do because we were working. And I just said, ‘Let's not worry about finding anything. We'll let it just find us.”

When the listing popped up on BizBuySell during their final week of downtime, it felt like perfect timing. Jason reached out right away.

“It all happened in just over 30 days — they say it usually takes around 60,” Jason said. “We moved fast, and after going and meeting everyone, we’re even more excited. The people are great, and the whole system is super well organized. I’m impressed.”

What stood out about Filta was the ability to offer a needed service without getting into the crowded, low-margin food industry. Filta’s oil filtration and fryer management services not only help kitchens run better but also support sustainability — something that resonated with the DeWitts, who live in the eco-minded Lake Tahoe region.

“Our last company helped people — the calcium and trace minerals we used reversed things like osteoporosis and osteopenia,” Jason said. “We were making a real difference, and this kind of falls into that same category. Being able to take used cooking oil and turn it into biodiesel is very exciting. We live in the Lake Tahoe area, where everything is super green, so just trying to make everything better fits our lifestyle and community.”

The DeWitts are launching their Filta business across Northern Nevada — including Reno, Carson City, and the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe — with a lean setup and a plan to scale. They’re starting with one technician and one van, with Jason running a second van himself and Stacy managing the office and day-to-day operations.

“Stacy’s learning everything so she can step in if someone’s out,” Jason said. “I’ll probably run the second van for three to six months to get a feel for how it all works, then step back and start adding more vans and employees. We want to build a team where employees get days off and support.”

They already have a strong foundation with 12 active clients, including a university and a hospital, which gives them solid cash flow as they start to grow. Their goal is to add more vans and expand their presence in the region, especially targeting ski resorts, casinos, and upscale restaurants that want to improve kitchen safety and sustainability.

“Besides the ski resorts and casinos, we’ve got some great local connections,” Jason said. “Our relatives own four restaurant locations, and we also know someone on the restaurant association board who has worked with a ton of restaurants in the area. There are at least 10 high-end spots in Lake Tahoe that could benefit from our service and want to be greener.”

For the DeWitts, the chance to connect locally and grow their network is a major draw of the business.

“I’m excited to be out in the field, talking to people and building relationships,” Jason said. “With my old job, it was trade shows, but now it’s meeting people right here in our community. I love that.”

The DeWitts are bringing a fresh start and a strong business background to Filta in Northern Nevada, and they’re ready to get to work.
