After a successful 34-year career in corporate America managing a portfolio for a food company, John Plaso reached a point where he was ready to pursue business ownership. He had spent decades building his career inside a large organization and wanted the chance to take more direct control over what came next.
“I was running a portfolio for a food company, and I just wanted to do my own thing,” Plaso said. “I always wanted to be my own boss and grow something.”
Tide Cleaners stood out because of the strength and familiarity of the Tide name. Plaso opened his first location in Omaha 14 years ago and has since expanded his footprint to nine operating Tide Cleaners units across the region. The business has also given his family more freedom and given his two grown sons a firsthand look at what it takes to grow from one location to nine.
Plaso sat down with 1851 Franchise to discuss why he left corporate America to build something of his own and how 14 years of ownership have shaped the way he thinks about growth, family and the future of the dry-cleaning industry. Here’s what he had to say:
1851 Franchise: Tell us your story in one sentence.
John Plaso: On the personal side, I am a married father of two grown boys, and professionally, I spent 34 years in corporate America running a portfolio for a food company before opening this franchise 14 years ago.
1851: What was happening in your life that made you realize it was time to make a change?
Plaso: I was running a portfolio for a food company, and I just always wanted to do my own thing. I always wanted to be my own boss and grow something.
1851: Why did you choose this franchise over every other opportunity?
Plaso: The brand. It's a $4 billion brand that's been around for 80 years, and the strength of the brand is what drew me in by far.
1851: What is it really like owning a Tide Cleaners franchise?
Plaso: It's fantastic. It is all about customer service and being the best in customer service, and providing the best quality for that service. Growing our customer base and having them come back time after time with repeat business, knowing they are getting great quality with a great brand name, is everything.
1851: How has owning this franchise changed your life?
Plaso: Oh, of course, it has changed it. It has allowed my family the freedom to be our own boss and grow at our own pace. It has also allowed my boys to see what it takes to be an entrepreneur and grow a business from one location to nine.
1851: If your best friend had enough money to buy this franchise tomorrow, what would you tell them?
Plaso: I'd encourage them to go for it without hesitation. The industry is seeing a shift in ownership, which opens up a great window to partner with or acquire established local operators who are ready to retire. As you expand your presence and bring those locations under a strong brand umbrella, you gain incredible economies of scale in marketing and logistics. Reaching that level of efficiency makes it an extraordinarily rewarding business to be in right now.
1851: What's the one thing you wish someone had told you before you bought this franchise?
Plaso: I wish I had fully appreciated early on just how powerful long-term brand equity really is. While building and scaling over the long haul requires a meaningful capital investment, the return you get from this brand is incredible. Because it's a household name, attracting new clients and building immediate credibility in your market happens almost naturally. That built-in recognition makes every dollar you invest work that much harder for you.
