&#8220;The mood is very positive, especially compared to the mood over the last few years,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;The economy is still challenging, but our leads are less hesitant in the process and more optimistic. They are much more forward moving this year over last.&#8221;

The Goddard School has experienced an uptick in franchise opportunity interest this year, including 14 signed deals. Additionally, on the real estate side, 10 new sites were signed for Goddard School locations, up from 5 at the same point last year.

&#8220;We have been pleasantly pleased with our development so far,&#8221; Padulo noted. &#8220;Our goal is to sign 36 new agreements this year, and we are on track.&#8221;

In agreement with this positive outlook is Eric Little, Senior Vice President of Franchise Development for <a href="http://www.rightathomefranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=franchisees-more-optimistic-about-buying-a-franchise-zors-say-24" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Right at Home*</a>.

&#8220;We are experiencing a very positive shift in the mood of our prospective, brand new and existing franchise owners,&#8221; Little concurred. &#8220;Just last week we awarded six locations to three franchisees. New franchisees are coming to the table thinking about their own growth much quicker than before.&#8221;

Little said that in the past, franchisees would wait several years before purchasing additional territory. This year, franchisees who are just finishing up their first year are looking at multi-unit ownership as a possibility, and new franchise owners are doing the same.

&#8220;There is new optimism for franchise owners,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The mood shifts are definitely signs of improvement.&#8221;

Cautiously optimistic is Matt Haller, Vice President, Public Affairs and Chief of Staff to the President &amp; CEO for the <a href="http://www.franchise.org/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=franchisees-more-optimistic-about-buying-a-franchise-zors-say-24" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">International Franchise Association</a>. He said that, while the sentiment is improving, there is still an asterisk to note.

&#8220;The mood has improved slightly as franchisors are generally more optimistic about growth in 2012 versus 2011. However, credit access and uncertainty regarding tax rates beyond 2012 continue to hold the industry back from its full potential for growth,&#8221; Haller said. &#8220;With additional access to capital and more certainty on tax rates, the industry would be well-positioned to reach its forecast for modest 1.6 percent growth in new establishments this year.&#8221;

And that’s one thing that drew me in.Another thing I found intriguing is that when I was auditing, I would send an audit report out to whatever defense company I was auditing. But you would never see the results of your work. It was probably years in the making because any findings could be adjudicated five or 10 years down the road (depending on when the contract closed). So, one thing I like about painting and home improvement is you can always see the fruits of your work. You can see the end effort. It gives a sense of accomplishment.1851: What was your perception of franchising before you became a franchisee and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you’re in it?Kevin: One, that it was too expensive to get into. Because when you think of franchising, you think of the major chain brands. You don’t really realize that the cost of entry is there for somebody who’s just wanting to break the surface. I got a better impression when one of my friends, one of my lieutenants from Afghanistan actually, got into franchising. It was a lot of hard work at the beginning but the amount of independence he has now and the financial security he has now was appealing. When the opportunity came up and was presented to me, that’s what piqued my interest.1851: What excites you most about Fresh Coat Painters?Kevin: One thing I like about Fresh Coat is the expertise they bring in. One of their main executives came from Sherwin-Williams. There’s just years of experience there. They’ve got business coaches. You don’t get into business for yourself to work it as a job. You work it as a business. As an owner.1851: What advice do you have for people who might be thinking about becoming franchise owners?Kevin: One piece of advice is to try to get over your fear of the financial investment it may take. What’s your peace of mind worth? What’s your freedom worth to you? You can continue in a safe, routine job. But you’re always going to be dependent on other people as to when you can take off and what you can do. If you really want that freedom, I would say, although it’s hard work at the beginning, franchising has a great payoff.If you’re good at following a system, then franchising is probably for you. They like to recruit military because we train, from private up to officer, to be able to do the next person’s job. We do it through repetition and SOPs.
