California Franchisees Score Major Win Franchise corporations in California will find it harder to end franchise holder contracts after the California Assembly approved the S.B. 610 bill. The bill grants additional rights to franchisees in major fast-food companies. The bill is heading to the California Senate, where it is expected to pass. (TIME) Massage Envy Spa Opens 1,000th Location Massage Envy Spa opened its 1,000th location this week, in Exton, Pa. This opening makes Massage Envy Spa one of the largest franchise systems in the country. According to FRANdata only 2.4 percent of franchise brands operate with that many units. The 12-year-old massage therapy franchise is continuing its expansion and is on track to open 112 locations by the end of the year. (Franchising.com) Winter Weather Woes Noodles & Company is feeling the chill when it comes to its second-quarter same-store sales. The company is attributing the lower sales in the quarter with harsh winter weather. During the period Noodles opened 16 new restaurants, which helped raise revenue by 11.5 percent. However, second-quarter profit dipped slightly to $3.7 million, from $4 million a year earlier. (Nation’s Restaurant News) Auntie Anne’s is Going Mobile My Pretzel Perks is the new mobile loyalty app from the primarily mall-based quick-service brand Auntie Anne’s. The app is available in more than 1,000 of Auntie Anne’s U.S. locations for both iOS and Android. The loyalty app operates as a reward system, and users earn points for every dollar spent. The company has teamed up with MICROS Systems Inc. and Qubop Inc. to create the app. (QSR Magazine) Rolling into Chicago and New York How Do You Roll? has signed franchise deals in Chicago and New York. The sushi chain will be opening its first Chicago location in Northwestern Memorial Hospital in October and its second location in November. In New York, How Do You Roll? plans to open three restaurants over the next 12 months. The brand plans to open five new stores by the end of 2014. (FastCasual.com)
