Not only does May bring us spring flowers–bring us a celebration of all things meaty, saucy and American. National Barbecue Month is upon us, and with 80 percent of U.S. households owning a grill or smoker, we know that people are celebrating. For the month of May, barbecue suppliers and restaurants are rolling out specials and celebrations as an ode to the century-long cooking technique. Even though they already celebrate barbecue all year long, BBQ food brands nationwide are getting into the smoky spirit. Famous Dave’s*, a Minneapolis-based franchise, lists excellent barbecue recipes on their website such as Easy Grilled Steaks and Shredded BBQ Chicken Sandwiches. Check them out for some meal inspiration for this weekend’s backyard grill session. Bandana’s Bar-B-Q is known for its Southern style barbecue, which is seasoned with dry rub and cooked sauceless, and then hand-cut directly from the smoker. Their menu features large, family-style Bar-B-Q platters and you can purchase bottles of their signature sauces and rubs for your own homegrown party. In 1941, Travis Dickey opened up the first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Dallas and the brand has since grown to include 400 locations in 43 states. The brand lives and breathes barbecue and to celebrate its family-friendly atmosphere, Dickey's is promoting “Kids Eat Free on Sundays” and offers free ice cream cones everyday with the purchase of a meal. Georgia-based Shane’s Rib Shack is hosting its annual Rib Giveaway at participating locations tomorrow. The first 100 guests will receive a free half rack of slow-cooked baby back ribs, a 20-ounce drink and a special edition Rib Giveaway t-shirt. Did someone say pass the barbecue sauce? While the most popular times to grill are Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day, May provides warmer days and longer hours for outdoor cooking. So whether you're grilling at home, or going out, you’ll be covered this month. With the weekend just around the corner, take advantage of the sunny weather and get ‘er grilling.
