What do you want us to know?Ken Hess: I spent about 30 years as a financial advisor, reaching the level of VP of Investments at Morgan Stanley and AG Edwards. After retiring, I found I had too much time on my hands. Around the same time, several of our family members needed caregivers. That experience got me thinking about home care as a meaningful way to spend this next phase of our life. I’ve also been very involved in volunteer work, including over 20 years with Scouting America — my youngest son is an Eagle Scout.Linda Hess: I retired three years ago after more than 30 years as a middle school teacher, teaching fifth and seventh grade. Teaching is about making a difference in people’s lives, and I saw home care as a way to continue doing that. When some of our family members needed support, we realized just how important quality home care really is.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Ken: I’ve owned several businesses before, all started from scratch. We have four children and three grandkids — we’d love for this to be something they grow into and expand in the years to come.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Linda: We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary as a couple this year, and we’ve always been a strong team. Within just two years,&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/griswold/how-this-graphic-designer-and-hairstylist-found-a-new-passion-with-griswold-franchise-in-minnesota-2725561">the couple had already outgrown their initial setup</a>, moving into a larger office and expanding their team with key roles like case managers and recruitment coordinators.&nbsp;<h2>Scaling With Purpose, Not Just Speed</h2>Today, the Myhres own six territories across the Twin Cities, which is a milestone that didn’t happen by accident. “Part of that is the fact that there weren’t really any Griswold locations in the Twin Cities area, so when we brought it here, it was kind of a double-edged sword because no one had ever heard of the brand, but we also had room to grow,” Brett said.That lack of brand recognition meant the Myhres had to build trust from the ground up by educating families, establishing credibility, and proving their commitment to high-quality care.As their reputation grew, so did demand, often beyond the boundaries of their initial territories. Expanding into adjacent areas became both a natural next step and a way to better serve Clients already seeking their care.“We were getting Clients in different areas, and now that we have purchased those, we are locked in,” Brett said. “We had to work really hard to build that brand recognition in the area. We were really on board for it. When they did the rebrand, it really helped support our growth by making it more recognizable. Cathy Malafronte and her mother, Frances, opened the in-home care business in 1991 after Frances’ father was diagnosed with dementia and the family struggled to find non-medical options in the area.
