Voyage Minnesota: Life & Work with Nicole Myhre

The Minnesota-based Griswold franchisee explains how a personal tragedy with her grandmother ignited a passion for providing better home care options for seniors.

In a recent interview with Voyage MinnesotaGriswold franchise owner Nicole Myhre shared her journey from being a hairstylist to opening a non-medical home care business in Anoka County, Minnesota.

“If you would have told me six years ago that I would leave my career as a hairstylist and all my dear clients to own a home care company, I wouldn’t have believed you,” said Myhre.

Myhre’s path to Griswold began after the devastating loss of her beloved grandmother to COVID and dementia in 2020, which revealed the need for better home care options across the country.

“I couldn’t be there with her or attend her funeral,” said Myhre. “Let’s just say it rocked me to my core. Devastated me that I could not hold her hand in her last days. What living in isolation could do and how if she had been able to stay in her home may have changed the story. If anything, we would have been able to have more control over her care and how she was treated. So that’s the sad part but what has transpired since then has been nothing short of a miracle.”

Following this experience, a life-changing conversation with a friend put Myhre down an unexpected trajectory. “I met one of my forever friends at a retreat here in Northern MN six years ago,” she said. “She is from the East Coast and told me about Griswold Home Care, where her grandmother was one of the first women to open the franchise for Jean Griswold.”

Founded in 1982, Griswold is a non-medical home care franchise with over 170 units that is backed by over 40 years of experience providing quality home care to the elderly, disabled adults and individuals recovering from illnesses. Dr. Jean Griswold was a senior care professional who had multiple sclerosis (MS) and recognized firsthand that the elderly often lacked the assistance they needed to remain independent at home. Griswold set out to offer a wide variety of services to accommodate the unique needs of the elderly, disabled adults and individuals recovering from illnesses, with care plans customized to fit each client that could be adjusted as their needs change over time. Their home care services include homemakingpersonal carecompanion carehospice care support, respite carelive-in overnight care and more.

The more Myhre learned about the Griswold brand, the more she felt confident it would be a perfect way to help the people of her community. Now, with Griswold of Anoka County, Myhre says her mission is to keep hope alive for families that have hit roadblocks or are struggling.

“I see my grandmother every day in all the people that I meet and help,” said Myhre. “It’s extremely rewarding to be a part of the relationships between clients and caregivers form and become like family. God has taken the tragedy and turned it into a blessing. I have so much faith and know this is our calling.”
