Hillary Clinton has called for an end of tip credits for restaurants. Clinton said during a rally at the Javits Center on March 2, the U.S. is the only industrialized country in the world to require its tipped workers to get their income from tips, rather than wages. Currently, many workers are receiving a tipped minimum wage of $2.35 per hour—a number that Clinton said was “shameful.”

Clinton called to attention the fact that there are 43 states allowing employers of tipped workers to pay their employees less than the minimum wage. Restaurant Opportunities Center United, a New York-based labor group, applauded Clinton’s stance on the issue.

“We applaud Democratic presidential front runner Hillary Clinton for coming out strongly in support of the elimination of the tipped minimum wage, and urge New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature to follow her lead by abolishing the sub-minimum wage system in New York once and for all,” the group said in a statement.
