Planning franchise-wide promotions is one of the most effective ways to create excitement around a brand while supporting system-wide sales growth. This can include limited-time marketing efforts designed to encourage customer action. While many people associate promotions with discounts or coupons, effective promotions can also be bundled services, exclusive experiences, loyalty rewards, product launches, seasonal offerings or special events, for example.

At its core, a promotion should benefit both the customer and the business. Whether the goal is attracting new customers, increasing repeat business or creating excitement around the brand, a well-planned promotion can help franchisees see stronger results while delivering a consistent experience across locations.

Start With the Business Objective

Before building a promotion, franchisors should identify the specific outcome they want to achieve. Are they trying to attract new customers, increase visit frequency, introduce a new product or strengthen customer loyalty?

"Many businesses immediately default to lowering prices, but that can train customers to wait for the next deal rather than buy at full value," said Cole Arranaga, co-founder and COO of Golf Envy. “When we think about promotions, we are typically looking at ways to increase value rather than reduce price. That might mean adding services, creating special experiences, offering limited-time benefits or packaging things differently.”

By starting with a clear objective, brands can create franchise-wide promotions that support growth without weakening their pricing strategy.

Create Consistency Across the Franchise System

One of the biggest challenges when planning franchise-wide promotions is ensuring every location executes the campaign the same way. All franchisees should understand not only what the promotion is but why it exists and how it's supposed to be presented to customers.

“The franchisor should provide clear messaging, marketing assets, timelines and expectations,” Arranaga said. “The more you can simplify execution, the more likely franchisees are to implement it successfully.”

A promotion can only succeed if franchisees are prepared to handle the additional customer interest it creates. Before launching a campaign, franchisors should make sure locations have the staffing, inventory and resources needed to deliver a positive customer experience. Planning ahead helps franchisees get the most out of the promotion while avoiding service issues or customer frustration.

Think Beyond Discounts at the Local Level

When evaluating franchise-wide promotions, brands should consider how the campaign fits within their long-term positioning.

"A lot of businesses become addicted to discounts because they create a short-term spike in activity," Arranaga said. "The problem is that over time they can erode margins and devalue the brand. Instead, I prefer promotions that add value while maintaining price integrity. Those tend to perform better over the long term and create a healthier customer relationship.”

At the local level, operators should also look for ways to connect the promotion to their community. They can do this through partnerships, events and relationships that make the promotion feel more relevant and engaging to local customers.

How to Successfully Plan Franchise-Wide Promotions

  • Define the business goal before starting the promotion.
  • Add value rather than simply lowering prices.
  • Equip franchisees with ready-to-use marketing assets and clear instructions.
  • Encourage local operators to connect promotions to community events and partnerships.
  • Measure results and gather franchisee feedback to improve future campaigns.

When done correctly, franchise-wide promotions can strengthen customer relationships, support franchisees and drive long-term growth without sacrificing brand value.
