Franchise Sales Leader: Jamie Cecil
Brand: Mellow Mushroom
Jamie Cecil, vice president of franchise development at Mellow Mushroom, did not plan a career in franchise sales. He ran training and part of operations at Quaker Steak & Lube when the brand's vice president of franchise sales left for another company, and the CEO at the time asked whether he had ever considered the job. Cecil had not. He has worked in franchise sales and development since roughly 2009.
He joined Mellow Mushroom a little over a year ago and runs franchise sales for the pizza franchise by himself, from first inquiry through a signed franchise agreement. He said candidates now arrive having already read the FDD.
Cecil spoke with 1851 Franchise about how much research today's buyers do and why he brings up closures before they can find them on their own.
1851 Franchise: How did you get into franchising?
Cecil: I was working for Quaker Steak & Lube out of Sharon, Pennsylvania. The vice president of franchise sales was leaving for another company, and the CEO at the time came to me and said, "Hey, you ever thought about franchise sales?" I was like, "No." He said, "You've got a sales background. You obviously understand operations. It'd work well for you." Then he said, "But one thing. You can go to jail for this." I'm like, "Whoa, what?" He said, "No, no, I'll hook you up with the attorneys. We'll keep you out of jail." Because obviously there are certain things you can and can't say, earnings claims and all that.
1851: What has changed most about today's franchise candidates?
Cecil: The biggest thing is that candidates coming in today do a lot more research before they ever reach out to us. They've researched FDDs. They know the questions to ask. They've already done a lot of background research on your company. I don't really have to educate them on Mellow Mushroom. Typically on the Mellow side, a lot of our franchise candidates have dined in our restaurants before. They know the brand; they love the product. They ask if you have an Item 19. They've done their homework before they reach out.
1851: What separates high-performing sales organizations from the ones that struggle?
Cecil: Being honest with the candidate and not trying to sugarcoat things. People say, "Have you had closures?" Just be honest. Yeah, we've had closures. No brand out there hasn't. It's a 10-, 15- or 20-year commitment. It's a lot like getting married. So be honest and say yes, we have had closures, and there are reasons why. Sometimes the lease expired. Sometimes they got burned out after 15 or 20 years and their kids don't want to do it. Landlords raise the rent. There's a partner dispute. If you try and make something up, they've done their research and they're going to know.
1851: How do you build credibility during discovery?
Cecil: I'm the main point of contact throughout the process, from the first conversation until we sign the franchise agreement. That's by design. Candidates shouldn't have to repeat their story to five different people. But I've got a strong group behind me. Our design, operations and marketing teams get involved when they're needed. That means I can keep things moving without making the candidate wait for every answer. I've had a lot of candidates say, "Wow, I reached out and you got back to me right away." You can't wait 48 or 72 hours or a week to get back to somebody.
1851: What should an emerging brand fix before it accelerates development?
Cecil: Making sure your economics work, because if your economics work, it's really easy to sell the brand. It makes my job way easier. Along with that is making sure you have the operations support and the marketing support and all of those pillars a franchisee is going to need to make their business successful. If you don't really have an operations team or marketing support, that will become very transparent to a franchisee quickly. You can't support the growth you're trying to achieve.
