Sital Patel, the franchisee behind KLA Schools of Flower Mound, Texas and a former sixth-grade science teacher with a master’s degree in education, was looking for a way to continue making an impact in children’s lives while also creating flexibility for her own family. Nearly a decade after opening her school in 2016, she has built a thriving community where more than 31 countries and 17 languages are represented, all while balancing the roles of educator, business owner and mom.
“Before KLA, I was teaching sixth-grade science at a middle school,” Patel said. “I was doing that for seven years when I knew that I wanted to do something else, while still being in education and able to make an impact.” Armed with her education degree and principal certification, she debated whether to pursue administration or business ownership. “That is when KLA kind of fell into our laps,” she said. “We were amazed by the philosophy and really fell in love with the approach and the schools. I loved how unique and child-focused the KLA brand is. Here, it is more of a community feeling in the building.”
Now nine years in, Patel says her school is at its strongest point yet. “The business has been doing well. We are probably at the best we’ve ever been now as far as enrollment and occupancy,” she said. “School life and the building are thriving. It’s the highest point so far in my experience as an owner.”
Setting the Tone: Hands-On Leadership
When it comes to a day in the life of a KLA Schools franchise owner, Patel says each day begins with presence and connection. “I walk into the building, greet the teachers, say hello to everyone,” she said. “I meet my leadership team and we go over the day with the office staff, the director, going through what we have going on and any events that are coming up.”
Patel also positions herself as a resource for her staff. “Sometimes we have teacher meetings if they want to chat. I am always available to talk with them,” she said. “I am probably one of the more hands-on owners. My goal is to really make sure I am creating the environment that I want here, and that starts with the staff we have in place.”
And that focus extends to recruitment. “Hiring is also a big part of what you do — sometimes I have interviews and things like that,” Patel said. “It’s really just about being here for the team and giving them what they need.”
Balancing Business and Family
Patel says one of the greatest benefits of franchising with KLA is the personal flexibility it affords. “As an owner, I have the flexibility of coming in after dropping off my kids in school and leaving to come pick them up,” she said. “When I first left the classroom, I was pregnant with my twins, which is one of the reasons I had to leave work at that moment. Going the business route, while still working with children, has allowed me to have personal flexibility as an owner to do the things I need as a parent and as a mom.”
She usually wraps up her day at the school in time to pick up her children. “I can manage both my business and my personal life,” she said. “Franchise ownership has definitely provided that for me.”
While Patel is highly independent in her daily operations, she leans on the franchisor when needed. “I have corporate access anytime I need — people in different departments who are just a call or text away,” she said. “I can easily text my operations consultant for a different set of ears and possibly some advice. It’s always good to get their perspective — they are always available for everything, from marketing to operations.”
Building a Community Within a Community
Patel’s favorite part of ownership is the relationships her school nurtures. “KLA Flower Mound is really a community within a community. We have over 31 countries and 17 languages represented here,” she said. “It’s really cool being able to connect with so many different people from different places. The babies that have started and have been here four or five years — we go beyond just being a school for them. We’ve watched their family go through life and through changes, and we can all grow together.”
For Patel, KLA Schools has provided the perfect balance of professional growth, family flexibility, and meaningful community impact.
