The three original Layne’s Chicken Fingers restaurants in College Station, Texas have been acquired by the corporate team after former owner, Mike Garratt, retired after three decades with the brand. Garratt became a regular at Layne’s in 1994, visiting for a quick, delicious lunch, but quickly became a key member of the system.
He was offered a job with Layne’s during his junior year at Texas A&M, then in 1997, he was promoted to management. In 1999, when he was preparing to graduate, Garratt decided to take a leap.
“That’s the point where I approached Layne and told him I wanted to buy his portion of the restaurant out, or I was going to go get a real job,” Garratt told The Battalion. “So he sold me his portion and in 1999, I became the sole owner of Layne’s.”
Since then, he has watched the chicken franchise grow and evolve, strengthening its grip on the College Station community (quickly becoming a cult favorite) and bringing its Soon to be Famous™ chicken fingers to new states.
Now, as he steps back and looks to retirement, Garratt will continue to be a part of the brand with a seat on the board of directors, and the corporate team will oversee the three restaurants as it works to continue growing in Texas and beyond.
