An iconic menu item is getting a savory twist at some McDonald’s locations in Northern California and Hawaii, per a recent Nations Restaurant News article. The brand has introduced cheesy bacon fries to its menu in select cities as a “regional limited-time-offer menu item” available through the end of the year.

The menu addition is similar to the Cheese & Bacon Loaded Fries available at Australian McDonald’s locations, which were recently made available at the brand’s new flagship restaurant in Chicago.

While the fries cost $3.50, they’re made with real cheddar cheese sauce and have ample bacon, the San Jose Mercury News reported after a taste test. While some are speculating that the brand may be teasing the item to test consumer interest in a nationwide rollout, McDonald’s says the fries are simply a chance to add some regional spice to its menu, as it often does.
