Mellow Mushroom is continuing its steady expansion across Virginia with plans to open a new franchise location in Danville, marking a significant addition to the brand’s presence in the Commonwealth. The restaurant is slated to open in August 2026 in the former Checkered Pig building on Crown Drive and will be owned and operated by local entrepreneurs Richard Barrick, Jon Walker and Meredith Walker, who also own River District Social and Walker’s Roadside Grill in downtown Danville. The announcement highlights both Mellow Mushroom’s franchise growth strategy and the brand’s emphasis on experienced, community-rooted operators, Chatham Star-Tribune reported.
The Danville deal was the result of nearly six months of discussions, site visits and approvals between the ownership group and Mellow Mushroom’s franchise development team. Throughout the process, company leadership visited Danville to evaluate the market, tour existing restaurants operated by the group and assess the proposed location. The owners also traveled to Mellow Mushroom’s headquarters in Atlanta, where they met with executive leadership, toured corporate facilities and gained deeper insight into the brand’s operations and culture.
The Danville location will total about 4,500 square feet after the existing building is fully renovated and expanded. The restaurant is expected to seat between 140 and 150 guests and will include a designated to-go area to accommodate takeout and third-party delivery orders. Once open, the restaurant is projected to employ about 60 people across a mix of full-time, part-time and management positions.
For Mellow Mushroom, the Danville opening represents continued momentum in a key growth state, joining established locations across Virginia in markets such as Richmond, Charlottesville, Roanoke and Virginia Beach. For the local ownership group, the project builds on their role in Danville’s ongoing revitalization, bringing a nationally recognized brand into the market while maintaining a strong focus on quality, service and community engagement.
