ATLANTA — Mellow Mushroom, the psychedelic pizza franchise known for its imaginative pizzas, hand-tossed stone-baked dough and unique atmosphere, began 2026 by signing four franchise deals for six units. This included a three-unit Kentucky deal, and many of the new operators came from the brand's own customer base.

“Our Q1 momentum really came down to two things: strong brand affinity and a more focused franchise development effort,” said Jamie Cecil, vice president of franchise development. “Many of our new franchisees were already customers who knew and loved the product, which speaks volumes about the strength of the brand. At the same time, we’ve made franchise growth a clear priority, and that increased focus is now translating into real results.”

The Q1 deals span four states, including new restaurants in Bozeman, Montana; Jonesboro, Arkansas; Carrollton, Georgia; and across Lexington and Richmond, Kentucky.

Mellow Mushroom has also leaned into a smaller-format Fast Fine concept it recently introduced, which trims roughly 1,500 to 2,000 square feet from the traditional full-service footprint. Guests order at the counter, but the food is delivered to the tables. The refreshed model gives franchisees a more flexible way to enter new markets.  

"The fast-fine format has created real estate and market opportunities that were not always available within our traditional reach, and operators are responding to that flexibility," Cecil said. "But what really attracts potential franchisees is the Mellow Mushroom dining experience, regardless of real estate. It’s the brand's nostalgia and the feeling of sitting around a table with friends and family. That’s what people love, and that’s what they want to bring to their communities."

Looking ahead, the brand continues to see opportunities across the Southeast, where there’s still significant white space. It has also seen pockets of demand in markets like Kentucky and parts of the Midwest, where it is looking to expand with the right operators. 

“For us, it starts with strong financial capability and proven business acumen,” Cecil said. “Restaurant experience is certainly a plus, but it’s not a requirement. We’re looking for operators who understand how to run and grow a business — we can support them on the restaurant side.”

Coming off a strong Q1, Mellow Mushroom has a goal of signing an additional four deals in the second quarter and beyond.
