Opening a restaurant in a major college market like Tuscaloosa is a high-stakes gamble, especially for independent mom-and-pop owners handling supply chains, marketing and menu engineering entirely on their own. After three years running Curry Kitchen on McFarland Boulevard, local restaurateur Mitul Patel realized that navigating the competitive North Alabama food scene required a more robust backbone.
On August 10, Mitul, alongside partners Pragnesh Patel, Jaimin Patel and Shital Bokheni, will officially open Alabama's very first Beef 'O' Brady's location at 3799 McFarland Blvd. By shifting from an independent concept to a proven, family-focused franchise model, this local ownership group is filling a specific gap in Tuscaloosa: a community-centric sports restaurant where families, local sports teams, and football fans can gather over scratch-made food without the traditional rowdy sports bar environment.
Mitul sat down with 1851 Franchise to discuss why he moved from independent restaurant ownership to franchising and how he hopes Beef 'O' Brady's will serve the Tuscaloosa community. Here's what he had to say:
1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?
Mitul Patel: I used to own an Indian restaurant called Curry Kitchen on Highway 11 on McFarland Boulevard, which I ran for more than three years. After it closed, my partners and I discussed opening a Beef ’O’ Brady’s*. We have already opened locations in Florida and Mississippi, but this will be my first official location as an owner.
1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?
Mitul: I ran an independent mom-and-pop restaurant, Curry Kitchen, where I faced a lack of operational support. With a franchise, you receive robust support, and the entire business is more streamlined to run. It has established recipes, menu items and pricing, and corporate handles the marketing and administrative tasks.
1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?
Mitul: While I initially planned to operate an independent business on my own, I soon realized that having a franchise system for support is a major advantage. It was not my original plan, but knowing what the corporate team at Beef ’O’ Brady’s does to support us, I highly value working alongside them.
1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?
Mitul: We have known the Beef ’O’ Brady’s name for a long time because the brand is outstanding. It is not a typical sports bar; it is a family sports bar—the name speaks for itself. Beef ’O’ Brady’s provides a comfortable environment where families can eat just like at a traditional restaurant, without the restrictions of a standard sports bar.
Personally, I love the menu. They have a massive selection. If you have a five-member family or a local sports team dining together, one person might want pizza, while others want sandwiches, steak, chicken wings, chicken tenders or just an appetizer. They have everything in one menu, and it is great to have such a broad selection.
1851: What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?
Mitul: This will be our first location in Alabama, but we are looking to open more down the road. Our main goal for this specific location is to support the local community and the city of Tuscaloosa. We plan to host spirit nights and community events. We want to be a reliable partner for the community, the city and our team members.
1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?
Mitul: We are excited to officially open in Tuscaloosa and bring a family-friendly sports bar atmosphere to the community. Tuscaloosa is a wonderful area, and we are thankful for the contractors, city officials, inspectors and everyone who helped us get open as quickly as possible. The city has been incredibly supportive. Tuscaloosa is a major sports community, and game days here are massive. Beef ’O’ Brady’s is built for all ages, making it a great spot for families, students and local groups.
Everything on the menu is fresh and made from scratch, including our wings, burgers and tacos, with new menu items introduced regularly. We will have more than 30 TVs at this location, including 98-inch and 85-inch screens. Our focus is to create local jobs and support Tuscaloosa. We want to foster a great atmosphere and support local schools, youth sports and charities. We also plan to introduce trivia nights, karaoke and live music a few months after opening.
1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?
Mitul: Becoming a franchisee is a great opportunity. If you have the chance, do not hesitate — take it. It is like the difference between a house without a door and a house with a door. When you are part of a franchise, you receive incredible support. If your house does not have a door, you face all kinds of problems, whether it is a strong wind or not being able to sleep at night. With the support of a franchise, you can sleep easy. It is a great system to be a part of.
