MONEY: Why Halal Food Is A Hot Seller With More Than Just Muslims

While Muslim culture in America is certainly a topic of debate as the election cycle pushes on, the love of halal food is something Americans are embracing. According to a recent MONEY article, sales for both grocery stores and restaurant food in the category are on pace to reach $20 billion in 2016, growing by one-third since 2010.

Food that is prepared according to Muslim dietary law is considered halal food. While it excludes pork, there are also rules about how animals are handled, treated, and killed.

The growing Muslim community in America is definitely playing a role in this popularity, but millennials are catching on as well. As they become more concerned with where their food is coming from, halal food is a delicious but also humane choice for the generation.

Whole Foods has seen a significant increase in sales. Halal food sales have grown by double-digit percentages in the last five years. It’s only a matter of time before other restaurants and grocery stores start to catch on to the trend.
