Before franchising, I spent 18 years working for a telecommunications company, but moving into franchising wasn’t actually a switch. I worked in both industries for an extended period of time. I started in telecom back in 1998, and in 2005, I noticed a trend of telecom jobs moving to the Bay Area. I wasn’t prepared to move my family, so I wanted to find something that allowed me to stay in telecom while also starting something on my own.That’s where Sport Clips came in. It was the perfect opportunity for me to continue my telecom job. It wasn’t really meant to grow as big as it did, and I certainly didn’t think I was going to stay in telecom for another 13 years.In 2018, I felt that the franchise foundation was stable enough for me to step away from telecom entirely.&nbsp;&nbsp;1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Cangelosi:&nbsp;I initially thought franchises were like timeshares. Unfortunately, there are some poorly run franchises that have had profound negative impacts on operators. I started to formulate my own opinions when I was able to speak to existing franchisees about their experiences. Franchisors obviously want to put their best foot forward, but when you talk to the franchisees, they will usually share a more balanced view.1851:&nbsp;What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Cangelosi:&nbsp;At this stage, there are a few things that are really important to me in a franchise concept. The first is being able to scale. I love the idea of being able to learn from the first location and apply those learnings to additional locations. Being able to scale resources and marketing will hopefully contribute to improved profitability.The second factor is the inflection point. There’s this huge spectrum of franchises ranging from Subway that’s fairly penetrated to concepts that have just a few locations. Neither of those models appeal to me. Some concepts will get a lot of attention for a few years, but quickly fade as customer preferences shift.&nbsp;Lastly, the franchise should offer a value that sets itself apart from other brands. The food and ambience that Paris Baguette offers certainly achieves that.1851:&nbsp;What do you hope to achieve with your business? What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Cangelosi:&nbsp;This is the first food concept I’ve operated so my plan is to immerse myself in the brand for the first year to make sure I’m comfortable with the entire operation. Once that happens, I plan to quickly ramp up the remaining stores so that I can take advantage of the benefits of scaling.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What is the one thing about your story you want us to know?Cangelosi:&nbsp;One of my concerns early on was that the product might be limited to certain taste profiles. Luckily, there are some Paris Baguette stores near me that I was able to visit to test that theory.In one example, I bought a cake from a local Paris Baguette and brought it to my daughter’s high school dance competition. I wasn’t really sure what the response would be, but I knew my daughter and her team would share honest feedback. She told me later that everyone was so wowed by the cake and really loved it. Even though I had done a lot of the research from the business perspective, hearing feedback like hers reaffirmed my decision to join Paris Baguette.1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner?Cangelosi:&nbsp;I would encourage people to talk to the existing franchisees and ask direct questions about their experience with the brand. What do you want us to know?Anthony Runnels:&nbsp;I started my career in public accounting, where I worked at EY and received my CPA license. I worked my way up in a lot of senior corporate finance roles. During most of that time, I always had this itch and this yearning to do something more to serve people and to help out in the community.I ended up trying a year as an investment adviser doing financial planning, but the problem was I wasn’t helping the people in the way I wanted. That feeling never went away, and I never quite could put my finger on what kind of business I wanted, though I knew it was what I wanted.In early 2025, I stumbled across this podcast where there was a gentleman talking about franchising as a good way to take a step toward owning your own business. Truthfully, the best part of this business is going out and servicing people, seeing the reviews and hearing how professional we are and how much they love our service. It feels rewarding to see that.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Runnels:&nbsp;When I went into private industry, I handled a lot of SEC reporting and managing investor relations, dealing extensively with Wall Street investors and trying to take companies public. I eventually found my niche in startup and smaller sized companies primarily in media / entertainment and technology.I had experience in multiple kinds of business structures and eventually started looking for something that was AI-resistant in a growing kind of market, and something that I felt good about doing that would be a service to people. Franchising made sense as a good way to take a step toward owning your own business, but without the risk of doing everything from the ground up.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Runnels:&nbsp;I knew about other franchises like fast food, dry cleaning or laundromats, but didn’t realize how expansive they could be and how many industries are available. I always assumed franchising was a brick-and-mortar business that required a lot of capital to invest.I soon found out that franchising could be home-based. Now I have a little office of my own, but I work with handymen directly from their own home bases. I also wasn’t aware of the support you get from the corporate office and the training provided.I couldn’t imagine having started this business on my own, especially because I’m from a corporate finance background and am not a handyman by trade. I am already thinking of expanding into more territories and want to be top of mind for people when they think about needing a home service company.1851:&nbsp;Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Runnels:&nbsp;My personal life really drove my decision to move in this direction. My mom, who is in her later 60s and recently divorced, lives on her own. I realized these were the services she needed.I remember hearing her smoke alarms beeping, and she told me she didn’t trust just anybody to come over. That made me realize that I may not even be able to go over there and take care of what needs to be done in the way I would want.We also had another family member who had a really bad fall in her garage, and all of these instances kind of pushed me toward getting the franchise. Being able to do very simple modifications, like putting in grab bars, makes it more comfortable for people to stay at home, which is really where they want to be anyway.&nbsp;1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Runnels:&nbsp;Take your time, do your research, and talk to as many people in the industry as possible. My husband had previously mentioned it, and I was negative about it. Our growth plan is to open two to three successful centers in San Diego County, giving Melissa the opportunity to be as hands-on as possible.Melissa:&nbsp;My focus is literally how many kids we can help. As long as we can pay our bills and pay our people well, I want to serve as many families as possible, especially seeing so many children who are shy and lack confidence.1851:&nbsp;What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Gabe:&nbsp;Make sure you believe in the product. If you love chicken, you open a chicken franchise. Because when things get rough, and they will, your belief in the mission will be the only thing that keeps you going.Melissa:&nbsp;Agreed. You have to believe in the product you’re selling. We saw the direct impact of the program on our children, and that conviction is what makes the long process worthwhile.1851:&nbsp;Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Gabe:&nbsp;Our oldest son, Westley, also has epilepsy, which comes with emotional challenges. We now see him flying through the air and leaping, which is a big deal for a child who struggled to walk at 18 months.Melissa:&nbsp;My mom, the doting grandmother, was actually the one who introduced us to KidStrong after a coworker recommended it. Our son, Westley, was a late roller and needed physical therapy to learn to walk at 18 months. He struggled with basic motor skills and couldn't even run properly; he galloped. <a href="https://hardeesfranchising.com/">Hardee’s</a>, a 65-year-old burger chain best known for its Thickburgers and breakfast biscuits, is facing a fast-moving round of closures driven by a franchise dispute rather than a bankruptcy filing.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.inc.com/ava-levinson/hardees-shutting-dozens-restaurants/91282586">Inc. recently reported that</a> 77&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/franchise-deep-dive-hardees-franchise-costs-fees-profit-and-data-2721286">Hardee’s</a> restaurants are expected to close within two weeks as one of the brand’s largest franchisees exits the system.&nbsp;According to the report, Hardee’s is suing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.arcburger.com/">ARC Burger</a> — a franchise operator owned by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.highbluffcap.com/">High Bluff Capital Partners</a> — alleging the company fell behind on required payments and other contract obligations. Twenty-eight locations had already gone dark as of late December, with remaining sites scheduled to shutter across eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, South Carolina and Wyoming.&nbsp;At the center of the complaint is the franchising “stack” of ongoing fees and pass-through costs that keep a system running. ARC Burger allegedly owes more than $6.5 million, including royalties, advertising fund contributions, technology and training fees, rent and taxes, and that payments stopped in December 2024. Hardee’s also argued in the lawsuit that the franchisee’s cash flow was not being used to bring accounts current.&nbsp;Hardee’s, for its part, is framing the shutdowns as a contractual enforcement issue, not a brand-wide retrenchment. “These closures are a result of ARC Burger’s failure to cure its defaults under its franchise agreements, despite solid sales,” a Hardee’s spokesperson said.&nbsp;The situation highlights a familiar franchising pressure point: unit economics.
