The name reflects a transitional period for the parent company of Applebee's and IHOP.

The parent company of Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar and IHOP, formerly known as DineEquity Inc., has changed its name to Dine Brands Global Inc. According to a recent Nations' Restaurant News article, the change reflects a transitional time within the company.
“Our new company name reflects a shift in strategy and a values-based performance culture with greater autonomy and accountability at the brand level,” said Stephen P. Joyce, CEO of Dine Brands in a release. “We are focused on returning to a growth company and delivering strong returns to our shareholders.”
In 2018, Dine Brands system-wide sales are expected to range from flat to three percent. Applebee's is planning a large international push, with an expectation of 10 to 15 new restaurants opening worldwide. IHOP will continue to develop restaurants across the world, with an expectation of 85 to 100 new restaurants in 2018.
