Nation's Restaurant News: McDonald’s test of alternative straws pushed by Seattle ban
The brand is taking steps to address current environmental challenges by eliminating plastic straw use.
On July 1st, the city of Seattle became the first U.S. city to ban the use of plastic straws. According to a recent article in Nation's Restaurant News, this law is forcing many restaurants to consider alternative options for their customers. McDonald's has been testing out paper straws, and plans to roll these out in select markets this September.
“We understand that recycling infrastructure, regulations and consumer behaviors vary from city to city and country to country, but we plan to be part of the solution and help influence powerful change,” the brand said.
Franchises looking to evolve to meet changing consumer expectations may wish to consider testing out alternative options as well. McDonald's has taken the lead in this movement, and many will be sure to follow.
Two alternative options that are currently gaining popularity are biodegradable plastic and paper straws. McDonald's says that it continues to test other materials to ensure it provides the best option for consumers.
