NRN: Whataburger Pulls Toast, Buns Over Quality

The recall follows In-N-Out’s closure of 30 stores due to bread issues

Whataburger Restaurants LP pulled white buns and Texas toast from restaurants in three states this week, reportedly because of quality- but not health-related issues.

In a statement excerpted by Nation’s Restaurant News, the franchise’s corporate communications team said the recall was due to an issue with the flavor of the buns.

“There’s no health risk at all,” the statement said, “rather an impact on our bun’s flavor caused by an unbalance in the yeast, and we want to make sure our customers get the best product.”

The recall was issued one day after In-N-Out Burger closed 30 restaurants in Texas because of bun-related issues. Rather than closing stores, Whataburger pulled the affected bread and offered wheat-bun and tortilla alternatives for all affected menu items.
