Father’s Day Highlight: How This Father-Son Team Strengthened Their Bond Through Pet Wants Franchise Ownership
The Caley family's Pet Wants franchise in Frisco, Texas not only united them in a shared passion, but also transformed their relationships, all while making a positive impact on their community and its four-legged members.
A few years ago, Mike Caley, a corporate executive with a background in advertising and ad technology sales, was looking for a retirement opportunity that would allow him to provide for his family without relying solely on the stock market. When he found the fresh pet food franchise Pet Wants, it fit the bill perfectly, offering him not only a flexible business model, but also an opportunity to work with family. After trying the food with their four dogs and five cats, the Caleys knew they had found a product that they could truly believe in.
"We have a busy lifestyle. I still have a corporate job, so this is a side hustle, but also a long-term investment into our family and financial future," Mike said.
In April 2019, the Caley family started their Pet Wants franchise in Frisco, Texas. Mike and his wife Kim have four kids — Austin and Grace, their 17-year-old twins who live at home, and 33-year-old Justin and 29-year-old Tyler, both former Marines who have moved back to the DFW area after serving in the military. Initially, Mike and Kim ran the business, but it quickly grew much faster than they had anticipated. To keep up with demand, they involved Tyler, who began helping out on weekends at the farmers market.
"Working with the family was always part of the plan," Mike explained. “We have a big family and we knew that jumping into this venture, we'd be leaning on each other for support.”
Today, Tyler is the Store Manager and handles 100% of the deliveries and assists Mike at the farmers market on Saturdays. Mike's 17-year-old daughter Grace also lends a helping hand at the market on Sundays.
“When I was a young man, my dad was a doctor with his own practice, and he always wished there was an opportunity for me and my sister to help with his small business,” said Mike. “There wasn’t much I could do without a medical degree. So, that was in my mind when we took on this business — I know how special it is to find something you can grow with your family.”
Working together has also brought the Caleys closer and allowed them to share a mutual focus around something they are passionate about. Not only have the Caley children found a significant income source through Pet Wants, but they have also discovered new passions. Mike's daughter has started baking pet treats and keeps the profit from their sale.
"The very reason that I am still working on Sundays at the farmer's market is because my daughter wanted to participate in the business," Mike said. "It can be hard to focus on parenting as much as you should when you are working on your own thing, so it is great to have the opportunity to be able to spend time with my children, working together side by side. It has been really great and we've become a lot closer."
In addition to strengthening family bonds, the Caleys have found satisfaction in serving their community and their furry family members through their Pet Wants franchise.
“All of us together make quite the pack,” said Mike. “We are all very happy with the Pet Wants franchise — the flexibility allows us to make the most of the time we have with our family while providing other pet families with fresh, natural and conveniently-delivered pet food.”
