Pi Day, celebrated on 3/14 every year, marks a celebration of pi – the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. This year marks a once-in-a-lifetime coincidence for the math-centric date; Pi Day falls on 3/14/15, and matches up with the first four numbers that follow the decimal point in pi.

At prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the day marks the release of incoming freshmen class admission letters.

Food brands are celebrating, as well. Your Pie, the Athens, Georgia-based pizza franchise, is honoring the day at 21 of the brand’s locations. On March 14, participating locations will offer a $3.14 discount on all orders and is selling pints of craft beer for the same price. This promotion has increased the brand’s system-wide sales by nearly 300 percent over the average day for the previous two years. Additionally, individual locations have seen up to a 585 percent increase in sales compared to an average day in 2014.

To create buzz for the event, Your Pie is cross promoting on social media. Customers who pick up Pi(e) Day stickers through March 14 at participating locations, take a photo, and post it on social sites with the hashtag #YourPieDay, can win prizes.

Whitewater, Wisconsin-based Toppers Pizza* is also joining in on the fun. The brand will be giving away a free medium pizza for walk-in orders for 314 minutes on 3/14. Between 3:14 p.m. and 8:29 p.m., customers who visit the Mt. Prospect, Illinois location can get a free medium pizza while supplies last. Limit one per customer.
