The leading candidates for president are entering fall with new enthusiasm and a new mission to sell themselves to the American voting public. Those with flagging campaigns and low poll numbers now are&nbsp;feeling the pressure to appear more relevant and to somehow stand out. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump rolled out his ambitious tax plan Monday. The billionaire businessman says the plan will reduce rates for lower and middle-income families and corporations, while increasing rates for some, like hedge fund managers who he asserts don't pay enough, the Associated Press reports.<div>One of the biggest beneficiaries appears to be families that draw the smallest paychecks. Individuals that make less than $25,000 ($50,000 for married couples) would pay no income taxes under Trump's plan."They get a new one-page form to send the IRS saying, 'I win,'" reads Trump's tax plan, referring to those households who will pay no federal income taxes, CNN reports.&nbsp;<div>Trump told &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; on Sunday that, regarding taxes, &#8220;Some very wealthy people are going to be raised. Some people that are getting unfair deductions are going to be raised. But overall it&#8217;s going to be a tremendous incentive to grow the economy and we&#8217;re going to take in the same or more money.&#8221;</div><div>&nbsp;</div></div> Meanwhile, businesswoman Carly Fiorina is embracing a strategy of trying to sell her success as a CEO. That&#8217;s proving to be a tough mission as several people have lobbed criticism of her time at HP, including Yale Business School Senior Associate Dean Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and her rival Trump.&nbsp; Sonnenfeld, along with many others, say Fiorina's biggest misstep was the expensive and unprofitable merger with Compaq. He says the highly controversial, strategically misguided deal she pushed through dragged the company and its stock down, NPR reports. &#8220;Stapling together the carcasses of ailing businesses is not a successful track record,&#8221; Sonnenfeld said. Trump and Ben Carson are running neck and neck in the national Republican presidential horserace, while Fiorina is tied for third place with Marco Rubio, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton&#8217;s gap with Bernie Sanders has narrowed, NBC reports. She leads him by seven points with Joe Biden in the race, and 15 points without the vice president. That's down from Clinton's 34-point lead over Sanders in July and her enormous 60-point lead in June. In the GOP race, Trump is the first choice of 21 percent of Republican primary voters, followed by Carson at 20 percent and Rubio and Fiorina tied at 11 percent each. Jeb Bush is at 7 percent, John Kasich is at 6 percent and Ted Cruz is at 5 percent. No other Republican gets more than 3 percent, NBC reports. Back in July's NBC/WSJ poll, Trump was in first place at 19 percent, Scott Walker, who exited the race last week, was second at 15 percent, Bush third at 14 percent and Carson fourth at 10 percent. Rubio was at 5 percent, and Fiorina didn't register at all in the poll at that time. Meanwhile, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is insisting he will continue to pursue the Republican presidential nomination despite speculation he was considering dropping out of the race, his team told the Times-Picayune on Sunday. Jindal's staff sought to discredit a story in Politico that Jindal planned to quit running, calling the report "B.S." Politico reported that Republican "activists, operatives and strategists" in Iowa had named Jindal and former New York governor George Pataki as the next likely candidates to bow out.

It’s really fun.1851:&nbsp;What do you think about Mainland’s “Brands don’t sell brands, people do” method?Wood:&nbsp;When I'm browsing, I'm going to click on stuff that I feel like I relate to or something that is a human interest story.In franchising, people often think, “I'd love to do that, but I don't know if I can,” or “Somebody else can do it, but I just can't.”&nbsp;Being able to see the kind of person that's doing it, and, no matter who you are, there's someone who has a similar background or that you can relate to in some way, that has done it. I think putting that out there makes people curious. And then you click in, and it's their life story and their experiences. The reader likely doesn’t know this person, specifically, but it’s possible they have very similar experiences.I think that can draw people in more effectively than “This restaurant is growing!” or “This business is opening!” ever could.1851: How do you tell your writers to find the human hero in the story?Wood:&nbsp;We have talked a lot about continuing to ask the questions. Again, everyone has a story. We just have to get to it. I've said countless times, “Just keep asking. There has to be something. Think outside the box. Get curious on these calls with the franchisee, and really think about what is special about this person.”&nbsp;One of our questions for franchisee feature interviews is “What do you want me to know about you?” That opens it up. Regardless of your business or what you did before you bought a franchise, what do you want me to know about you?Being able to do that and dig deeper, even when there may not be an immediate connection between this story and their franchise journey, is really valuable. There have been times when it “clicks” later, and the writer realizes, “Oh, that's why they're the hero!”1851: Headlines and images are the first two things that people see. Are there any tricks in your bag when it comes to headlines and imagery to get picked up?Wood: Specifically in headlines, we want to talk about the human hero, but we don't necessarily want to say their name. We want to say who they are.&nbsp;More people are going to search for things like “veteran franchisee” or “moms in franchising”&nbsp; rather than a name that they’ve never heard before.It also has to be interesting, but you can't give everything away in the headline.&nbsp;And then with the image, just as much as possible, get a picture of a real person. It’s as simple as having something that people care about, and something that will catch a reader’s eye. If we’re talking about a person, we don’t want a stock image that someone will scroll right past.1851: Do you have any advice that you would give brands looking to get started right away?Wood: I think many in the franchise space have heard of the franchise horror stories: “I pay my franchise fee and the franchisor disappears,” or “I'm just a store number to them, I'm not a person.”One of our clients often says that, to be a franchisor, you need to understand what the franchisee is going through. When someone at the franchisor gets home from work, their family will ask, “How was work?” When a franchisee gets home, their family is asking, “How were sales today?” or “How was traffic?” These are franchise units, but they often represent the investment of someone’s life savings and a manifestation of so many hopes and dreams for the future. We can’t lose sight of that.&nbsp;No matter how big the brand gets or how fast they're growing, franchisors need to remember that these are real people with real backgrounds. Many have real families that this is supporting, and they've invested so much into this business. They’re building something in their communities and trying to make the most of the opportunity.They can’t just be viewed as “the person that's going to help me get a PR win.” They're still people. And then over here on the franchising side, really our mission is to help people build the business of their dreams to be happy and profitable.”In many cases, it’s this type of clarity — and willingness to define what a brand truly stands for — that separates short-term franchise growth from long-term franchise success. Here’s a blueprint for founders looking to build a franchise brand with real staying power:<h2>Define the Mission on Both Sides of the Business</h2>In the early days, it was easy for a founder to focus almost exclusively on product, service and operations. But franchising forces founders to zoom out and define why the business exists in the first place.Christian explains that Bee Organized operates with two simple but powerful missions: one for the end customer and one for the franchise owner.“That drives us and is kind of our litmus test of how we make decisions,” she said.For founders, this means clearly answering two questions:<ul><li>Who does your business serve, and how does it improve their life?</li><li>What does success look like for the people who will own your franchise?</li></ul>Without clear answers, it becomes difficult to build alignment across marketing, training, support and culture.<h2>Own Your Position in a Crowded Market</h2>“There’s a lot of noise out there,” Christian said. “We’ve got to know where we are in that lineup and really kind of stand up and own who we are.”Bee Organized positions itself as a home-based, lower-startup, lower-overhead service business that can begin as supplemental income and grow into replacement income. It is also unapologetically mission-driven and relationship-focused.Strong positioning is not about appealing to everyone. Honest positioning creates healthier expectations and stronger long-term alignment.<h2>Design a Scalable Model Without Selling an “Easy Button”</h2>Christian is direct about what Bee Organized is not: “If somebody is wanting the easy button, if somebody is wanting to replace a six-figure income right away, that’s not this,” she said.Early-stage franchise owners must be willing to roll up their sleeves, wear multiple hats and be deeply involved in building the business. Over time, the model can scale, but only if owners are willing to put in the work upfront.Founders do their brands a disservice when they oversell speed or simplicity. A scalable model still requires effort, patience and engagement. Saying that out loud protects both the system and the candidate.<h2>Treat Royalties as a Responsibility, Not Just a Revenue Stream</h2>Christian uses a race car analogy to explain the franchisor-franchisee relationship. “We give them the keys to that race car. That’s the franchise fee,” she said. “The royalty is us being their pit crew.”The pit crew is there to change tires, fix problems and help the car perform better. In franchising, that means providing ongoing support, training, tools and improvements.Royalties represent an obligation to over-deliver, not simply collect. The goal is for franchisees to know they are not alone and that the franchisor is invested in helping them reach their goals.<h2>Build a Relationship-First Growth Engine</h2>Without a brick-and-mortar location, service-based franchises rely heavily on local relationships. “You really have to go out and want to be the mayor of your marketplace,” Christian said.That means getting involved in the community, building referral partnerships and consistently putting yourself in front of potential clients and partners. Christian even encourages new franchisees to prioritize relationship-building in their first year.If a franchisee says business is slow, her first question is simple: how is your local marketing?Founders must bake this expectation into their model. Growth in service franchises is driven as much by human connection as it is by digital marketing.Founders-turned-franchisors are never truly finished building their system. It is usually a signal problem.You haven’t yet shown the market predictable success, scalable economics, leadership clarity or industry momentum.Multi-unit buyers don’t gamble. But one of the most underestimated shifts is how franchise candidates discover, evaluate, and ultimately choose a franchise opportunity.<h2>The Uncomfortable Truth:</h2>If you — and your brand — are not controlling the narrative, the narrative will control you.In the “olden days” (pre-2015), franchise candidates had limited ways to find opportunities. They went to franchise portals. They attended franchise expos. They read industry media. That exposure introduced brands — and then candidates were largely on their own.My gut says candidates actually moved faster back then. Candidates were told they were “coached for free” and that brokers had placed thousands of franchisees.What often wasn’t clearly disclosed was how brokers get paid — and how that compensation can shape recommendations. (Unlike real estate, where commissions are universally understood.)This added another layer of opacity to an already complex decision.<h2>And Now Comes AI (Everything Changes)</h2>AI is about to force a level of transparency the industry hasn’t fully reckoned with yet — legally, operationally, and culturally.The smarter AI gets, the more it will help candidates ask (and answer) questions like:<ul><li>What are the best home service franchises under $100,000?</li><li>Which franchises are actually the most profitable?</li><li>Which ones require the least day-to-day involvement?</li><li>Which brands have availability in my specific market?</li><li>Which franchises have the highest AUVs — and why?</li><li>Who are their real competitors?</li><li>What questions should I ask the franchisor?</li><li>Based on my personality traits, should I buy this franchise?</li></ul>And here’s the part that should make every franchisor pause.<ul><li>AI doesn’t get a commission.</li><li>It doesn’t care who pays whom.</li><li>It doesn’t benefit from steering candidates one way or another.</li><li>Its job is to cut through the BS.</li></ul><h2>So Where Does That Leave Your Brand?</h2>This is the moment where the spotlight turns back on you. Are you doing the basics?<ul><li>Are you clearly answering these questions anywhere?</li><li>Do you have structured, searchable FAQs?</li><li>Is your content actually readable and understandable by AI?</li><li>Are you shaping the answers — or letting others shape them for you?</li></ul>Because whether you like it or not, candidates are already asking AI these questions.
