Report: Americans Prefer Eating at Home to Restaurant Dining

A study conducted by NPD Group shows that despite increased restaurant spending, 4 out of 5 meals are consumed at home

Market research company NPD Group has published a report indicating that U.S. consumers are preparing and eating their meals at home more than they were a decade ago. Through its daily research on Americans’ eating behaviors, NPD Group found over 80 percent of our meals are prepared and eaten in-home.

Although food-service spending increased by two percent over the last year, restaurant visits were stagnant. The report suggests spending is up because the cost of meals at restaurants are rising faster than the cost of meals prepared in-home. The rise of third-party takeout and delivery services like Uber Eats, Grubhub and Postmates may also explain why spending is exceeding visits.
