Like many caregivers, Jeanine Gagliano got into the industry after a personal experience with caregiving. Gagliano first cared for her grandmother from an early age, cooking for her, ensuring she had what she needed around the house, and even driving her to appointments when the time came. Eventually, Gagliano pursued a career in broadcasting, but she stayed in close contact with her grandmother. So, when she began to consider transitioning to a new career, in-home care seemed like a natural fit. Now, Gagliano is celebrating nearly 10 years of successful business on Long Island. On Thursday, August 15 at 12 p.m. ET, Gagliano will join 1851 Franchise Publisher Nick Powills to discuss her pathway to success.

“Working in production became a lot to manage while I was also trying to raise my own family. My husband was also working in the city in finance, and we just agreed that we wanted to work for ourselves. I wanted to be the master of our ship,” Gagliano explained. “So he discovered Right at Home, and it felt right. Taking care of and loving seniors — it’s always been important to me ever since I started taking care of my Nan. It was the perfect storm, and it sounded great to have our own business, so we got started in 2015.”

While Gagliano and her husband now have five territories and a team of eight people, they started with just two territories, and the two of them managed all of the work. As they have grown, Gagliano maintains that the key to the teams’ success is a genuine care for the needs and satisfaction of the clients and their families. For example, communicating any unexpected schedule changes as early as possible allows time for other care arrangements to be made. Other times, it’s as simple as lending a listening ear to family members who are upset to think about the limited time their loved one has left.

This approach builds strong, long-lasting relationships that are both good for the business and fulfilling for both clients and caregivers. Gagliano shared the story of a family who engaged Right at Home South Shore Long Island to care for an aging woman. After years of care, the caregiver had essentially become a part of the family. After the woman passed, her daughters simply transferred service to their father to ensure he would be cared for by someone he already knew and loved.

In New York, Gagliano said, many people are constantly on the move for their careers, family functions, and other social events. Right at Home allows caregivers to be there for aging people when their families cannot. Looking toward the future, this need will only persist, and with the senior population on track to increase dramatically in the coming years, demand for services like Right at Home is only climbing.

“There are so many seniors that are going to need help. My goal is to just continue helping as many people as I can in the way we’re doing it; it’s about the mission, not the margin, for me,” she said. “But there is plenty of potential in New York, and this career is so meaningful. Every business has its challenges, but someone who truly wants to do it and is rewarded by helping others can find success with Right at Home.”

Gagliano is one of 15 franchisees in New York, and the brand is looking to continue expanding its impact throughout the state in preparation for the approximately 3.8 million baby boomers expected to turn 65 each year through 2029. For many people, age 65 marks the beginning of a need for some form of long-term care support.

With nearly 3.5 million people aged 65 and up in New York State, Right at Home is looking to add 29 units across the state to address ongoing needs. By targeting development in Ithaca, NYBuffalo, NYUtica, NYBinghamton, NYElmira, NYSyracuse, NYRochester, NY and New York, NYRight at Home will bring its in-demand services to clients and families in need.
