In 2003, Jim and Vicki Hancock, longtime corporate employees, changed career paths to become Sport Clips team leaders, trading the corporate world for haircuts. Today, after scaling their business to five stores, the day has come for them to retire. Their son, Tom, and his wife, Becky, will take over for them as second-generation team leaders.
Tom says, “Watching my parents grow their business over the years, we see it is a stable and profitable business with high demand and recurring revenue. The family friendly atmosphere and values make it a very desirable environment to be in.”
He continues, “My parents put time and energy into growing their business, and as second-generation team leaders, we want to preserve their legacy and take it to the next level. This business meant a lot to them and to carry that on is very special.”
Tom and Becky are successful business owners themselves, owning and operating four veterinary practices. Tom, a practicing veterinarian, and Becky opened their first practice in 2003. They began managing multiple veterinary practices in 2012. Today they oversee the hiring and management of their multiple practices.
Becky explains, “We are already doing much of what we will be doing as Sport Clips team leaders. We have very skilled people working in the daily operation of the practices, and we oversee the management and bigger picture things.”
When asked about entering an industry in which they do not have experience Tom comments, “It may seem like a daunting task but having a company that will walk you through the process is invaluable. The Sport Clips model is proven and tested. The support systems are unmatched. A huge benefit of franchising is having that support available. It is up to us to utilize it, it’s all there.”
Becky continues, “Sport Clips provides helpful and applicable technology, marketing and recruiting resources. There are business evaluation systems built in. We have the ability to look at how similar markets are performing and compare and see where we can do better. We are not stylists ourselves, so the layers of management fill in those gaps.”
While growing their own separate business, Tom and Becky have had a front row seat to Jim and Vicki’s journey, as well as Sport Clips rapid growth as a brand.
“Over the years we have seen Sport Clips grow tremendously,” says Tom. “It is now a nationally recognized brand with a presence in all 50 states and Canada. And it managed to grow responsibly. We take pride in being part of this brand.”
Becky concludes, “And we are also very proud of Jim and Vicki for the growth they have done in the Springfield, MO market. Their dedication, commitment and hard-work was incredible to watch. Holding on to it and preserving it is the right thing to do and we are honored to be able to do that.”
The Hancocks turned a desire for more freedom and flexibility in their lives into a thriving business. As second-generation owners, Tom and Becky will continue the family legacy for years to come.
