Sylvan Learning's Susan Valverde Earns White House Recognition

Rio Grande Valley programs partner for to help Texas students get a jump on STEM education.

Last week, the White House recognized individuals who were named as the Bright Spots in Hispanic Education and nine Rio Grande Valley programs were recognized as part of the initiative, including Sylvan Learning*’s own, Susan Valverde.

Sylvan Learning Centers partnered with Code the Town in order to stress the importance of computer coding to elementary school students through education in the STEM fields. In the programs first year, Susan Valverde drew participation from more than 1,000 students.

"If we can reach them before the fourth grade we can spark their interest and increase the number of students in STEM programs," Valverde told the Valley Morning Star. "This is nice icing on the cake, but the real prize is that we have now served more than 1,000 kids. To have moved the needle in Mission is the real prize."

The funding for the program is sponsored by Mission EDC and matched by Sylvan, so those attending the classes can reap the benefits of education without having anxiety about the costs, another way the program goes above and beyond to make sure everyone receives the best instruction possible.
