TechCrunch: Facebook Messenger Begins Testing Ads…and They’re Big

The social network tests out advertising on the Messenger home screen.

Facebook is taking ads to its Messenger platform. According to a recent TechCrunch article, the company is launching a small test in Australia and Thailand. Large ads will appear as card-style ads with image thumbnails with text and a link on the Messenger home screen underneath your recent conversations.

“Businesses have long been telling us that they are very excited about the potential of the Messenger platform to reach their customers and help them to drive sales, build brand awareness and increase customer satisfaction,” writes Facebook Product Manager Eddie Zhang, in an announcement detailing the new ads.

While business are excited to direct users to ads in more places, users may not be as excited to be disrupted. They may not want to be shown ads, but businesses are already reaching out to customers and resolving customer services issues on this platform in a way that users do enjoy.
