When Angel Rosales joined <a href="http://www.togosfranchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=togos-owner-angel-rosales-represents-franchisees-to-corporate-team-2705133" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Togo&rsquo;s</a> as a store manager in 1999, he did not expect to become a franchisee. Now, not only is Rosales a franchisee (two times over, with one store in Pasadena and another in Monterey Park), he represents the interests of all franchisees to the brand&rsquo;s corporate team as a member of the Brand Advisory Council.

Before Rosales was hired at <a href="https://togos.1851franchise.com/?utm_source=1851franchise.com&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=togos-owner-angel-rosales-represents-franchisees-to-corporate-team-2705133" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Togo&rsquo;s</a>, he owned a mom-&amp;-pop coffee shop inside a bowling alley outside Los Angeles. When the bowling alley was bought out in 1999, Rosales had to close the coffee shop. To help him back on his feet, Rosales&rsquo;s friend Allen Rosansky, a Togo&rsquo;s owner in Pasadena, offered him a job as store manager. Rosales accepted and was quickly running the show.

&ldquo;Allen knew my experience, so he allowed me to really take charge,&rdquo; said Rosales. &ldquo;I ran the day-to-day operations, paperwork, hiring and firing, all of the store-level operations.&rdquo;&nbsp;

In 2006, Rosansky decided to retire, and he was determined to have Rosales take over.

&ldquo;Things were going well with the restaurant, but he was ready to retire,&rdquo; Rosales said. &ldquo;I hadn&rsquo;t been planning on becoming an owner, but he made me a good offer, and he had all the details and numbers worked out. It was just a no-brainer. I knew everything about the store, including the volume and projections, so I knew it was a great opportunity.&rdquo;

After Rosales purchased the store, he quickly began setting goals for himself as an owner. One of those goals was to become an active member of the Togo&rsquo;s community.

&ldquo;I set about getting involved with the franchise in every way I could,&rdquo; said Rosales. &ldquo;I went to corporate meetings, manager meetings, franchisee meetings&mdash;anything I could get into. I wanted to become recognized as a leader within the system, and I wanted to help make decisions that would affect the brand.&rdquo;

Eventually, Rosales&rsquo;s efforts paid off when he was asked by an Executive Leadership Team member to join the Brand Advisory Council.

&ldquo;I was excited,&rdquo; Rosales said. &ldquo;I like to see the decisions that corporate was making, and this was an opportunity not just to observe, but to take an active role in making those decisions.&rdquo;

As a BAC member, Rosales represents the interests of franchisees to the Togo&rsquo;s corporate team. Rosales says the council is a product of the franchise&rsquo;s efforts to grow the brand around the franchisees, and not the other way around.

&ldquo;The corporate team is so eager to work with franchisees. The attitude is that we, the franchisees, know what&rsquo;s going on with the brand and customers better than anyone, so our input is essential for any operational changes Togo&rsquo;s is considering.&rdquo;

Rosales has learned to split his focus between his own restaurant and the concerns of the franchisee community, and that requires meeting regularly with other Togo&rsquo;s owners.

&ldquo;We have co-ops where I&rsquo;ll meet with local franchisees and discuss any issues and concerns that anyone is having, it&rsquo;s a totally open forum,&rdquo; Rosales said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll take everything from those meetings and bring them to the BAC, and the corporate team is always eager to hear what we have to say. They don&rsquo;t come with their own agenda.&rdquo;

Rosales&rsquo;s efforts to reach out to his fellow franchisees and to the corporate team is an extension of what he does as an owner. The multi-unit franchisee&mdash;Rosales acquired his second Togo&rsquo;s a year and a half ago and has plans to open a third soon&mdash;believes that success as a Togo&rsquo;s franchisee requires reaching out to the community and building relationships.

&ldquo;I have really strong relationships with our guests,&rdquo; Rosales said. &ldquo;I believe that&rsquo;s the most important thing as a store owner. Our product is great and the brand is strong, the only thing that&rsquo;s left for us to focus on the customer.&rdquo;

Rosales has made his Togo&rsquo;s locations staples of their communities by building strong relationships. Rosales&rsquo;s Togo&rsquo;s regularly host and contribute to fundraisers, participate in community service, and host community events.

&ldquo;Togo&rsquo;s is not a cookie-cutter store,&rdquo; Rosales said. &ldquo;Each store has to adapt to its neighborhood and really work to become an integral part of the community. People don&rsquo;t see us as this big faceless chain, they see us for what we are, which is a group of small business owners trying to offer something special to our communities.&rdquo;

As a member of the Togo&rsquo;s BAC, Rosales applies his philosophy of community integration to the entire franchise system, cultivating an open dialogue between the corporate team and franchisees. For Rosales, that open dialogue is what sets Togo&rsquo;s apart from other franchise brands.

&ldquo;We recently had our annual convention, and each year some of our franchisees are given awards and honors, but it goes both ways,&rdquo; Rosales explained. &ldquo;We honor and award the corporate team members as well. That&rsquo;s just one example of the way that franchise is designed to encourage mutual respect and recognition at every opportunity. I don&rsquo;t think you&rsquo;ll find that in many other franchises.&quot;

Brian Keaney comes from a long line of tradesmen; in fact, he jokes he’s known how to wire a house since high school. Here’s what he had to say:1851 Franchise: Frame your personal story for us. What do you want us to know?Brian Keaney:&nbsp;I grew up in the trades. My dad's an electrician, and between my grandfathers and uncles, there isn’t much that my family couldn’t do. From my childhood through grad school, I was often working for one of them. I like to say that at 15, I knew how to wire your house. I also knew that I didn't want to wire your house, so I went to college instead.I worked as a reporter and in corporate communications for many years after college. I still consider myself a writer (I think in blog posts), but I saw a couple of years ago that AI was going to totally disrupt the industry. I decided I needed to find something tangible because ChatGPT was coming for my job. Because I have a background in this industry and can speak the language, I thought this would be a good fit.1851: What did you do before franchising, and how did you decide franchising made sense for you?Keaney:&nbsp;A few years ago, I got a cold email from a consultant, and he said, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about opening a franchise?’ I said, ‘No, I hadn't,’ which was 100% true. But my philosophy is you should always take the meeting because you never know what's going to come out of it. The worst case scenario is that you lose 20 or 30 minutes.&nbsp;So, I took the meeting and started exploring franchises for a little bit. It just wasn't the right time for me then. But about a year and a half ago, I went back to him. We looked at a bunch of different franchises, a bunch of different industries, and eventually I settled on&nbsp;<a href="https://1851franchise.com/trubluehomeserviceally/info">TruBlue</a>. I couldn't be happier that I did.1851: What was your perception of franchising prior to becoming a franchisee, and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you are in it?Keaney:&nbsp;I didn't really realize how big franchising was before I got started. My vision of a franchise was a Dunkin' Donuts. I didn't realize just how many industries they got into. You name the industry, and there's a franchise out there for it, which just blew me away.I had no idea there was a handyman franchise out there, mostly because I could do the projects myself and wouldn't think to hire someone. But now that I'm in it, I'm a big fan. I'm confident that I could have run a "Chuck-in-a-truck" type operation, but I know I would not have been able to run a handyman company nearly as well without the training and support that I'm getting from TruBlue.1851: What made you pick this brand? What excites you most about this company?Keaney:&nbsp;I looked at a whole bunch of different franchises and industries. The two finalists were TruBlue and kids' sports. What are your plans for growth?&nbsp;Keaney:&nbsp;I really want to be able to support my family while helping my community. Like Ben Franklin said, I want to do well while doing good. My plans for growth are strong; I have so much work that I could be doing, but I am limited by hiring good quality staff. If I could hire five more guys today, I would do it because there's enough work out there for all of them.We're really selective with who we hire. They have to fit technically, meaning they have the skills to do a variety of jobs, but they also must have the soft skills to be able to go into a widow's living room and make her feel comfortable. Eventually, I would like to buy a couple more territories, but right now we're really focused on this area.1851: Is there anything else about your story you want us to know?Keaney:&nbsp;The idea of helping seniors age in place is more than just theoretical; it was personal for me. A couple of years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital and then rehab. When he got home, he couldn't move very well.&nbsp;The day before he got home, my uncles and I went over to his house and put Masonite over the wall-to-wall carpeting to make it easier for him to get around. It occurred to me that most people don't have the skills or resources to be able to do that themselves. My grandfather, who taught most of us how to do it, was lucky to have a family that could help him like that. Now, I'm able to help other families do that as well.1851: What advice do you have for other people thinking about becoming franchise owners?Keaney:&nbsp;It's definitely worth exploring. I am working a lot harder now than I did in my last job, and it's more stressful, but I'm also enjoying it so much more. So, one thing I like about painting and home improvement is you can always see the fruits of your work. You can see the end effort. It gives a sense of accomplishment.1851: What was your perception of franchising before you became a franchisee and what do you want people to know about franchising now that you’re in it?Kevin: One, that it was too expensive to get into. Because when you think of franchising, you think of the major chain brands. You don’t really realize that the cost of entry is there for somebody who’s just wanting to break the surface. I got a better impression when one of my friends, one of my lieutenants from Afghanistan actually, got into franchising. It was a lot of hard work at the beginning but the amount of independence he has now and the financial security he has now was appealing. When the opportunity came up and was presented to me, that’s what piqued my interest.1851: What excites you most about Fresh Coat Painters?Kevin: One thing I like about Fresh Coat is the expertise they bring in. I didn’t get into business for myself to be doing day-to-day operations like going out and doing quotes. I want to manage a business. I don’t want to run every aspect of it. You don’t get into business for yourself to work it as a job. You work it as a business. As an owner.1851: What advice do you have for people who might be thinking about becoming franchise owners?Kevin: One piece of advice is to try to get over your fear of the financial investment it may take. What’s your peace of mind worth? What’s your freedom worth to you? You can continue in a safe, routine job. But you’re always going to be dependent on other people as to when you can take off and what you can do. If you really want that freedom, I would say, although it’s hard work at the beginning, franchising has a great payoff.If you’re good at following a system, then franchising is probably for you. They like to recruit military because we train, from private up to officer, to be able to do the next person’s job. We do it through repetition and SOPs.
