Harwinton Man Pursues New Passion After Fall, Opens First TruBlue Total House Care In Litchfield County

Four years ago, Craig Henry found himself on the road to recovery after falling 13 feet on an elevator job site. After his own experience of recovering at home, he wants to help others make accessible modifications to their homes.

In 2018, a 13-foot fall down an elevator shaft resulted in several surgeries and months in rehab for Craig Henry. During his recovery process, he started to consider new career options. It was then that he discovered TruBlue Total House Care, the house care service brand that provides subscription-based home maintenance and handyman services for seniors and families.

Inspired by his own experience of coming home and making modifications to maneuver around easily, Henry decided to open Litchfield County, Connecticut’s first TruBlue Total House Care franchise. He aims to help local seniors and those with disabilities modify their homes to age safely in place.

The Road to TruBlue Ownership

Henry has always considered himself a handyman. Before opening his own business, he obtained three college degrees and worked in the elevator industry for 20 years. 

After multiple surgeries, Henry was put in a nursing home for several months. Eventually, he was released to go home. He had to use a wheelchair, scooter and walker to get around. This required home modifications such as a wheelchair ramp, grab bars and other amenities to be put in by a handyman. 

“It was difficult to get different services, electricians and contractors to come in and do quotes,” said Henry. “The stress of that experience is when I started thinking of my business model and a career outside of elevators. I have a four-year technology management degree from West Virginia Tech and an MBA from Keller. I always knew I wanted to have my own business.”

Henry recalled repeatedly coming across TruBlue during his online searches for the top franchise brands. “I was searching for a brand that helps everyday people, and I can relate to customers with my own personal story. Trublue was checking off all the boxes,” he said. 

Aside from TruBlue’s affordable model, it was mainly the company’s focus on aging in place that drew Henry in. “I thought it was just for seniors, but now I know it’s for all ages,” he said. “Most people will have some sort of disability down the road and will need these services. When I read the company's philosophy and what they focused on, I knew TruBlue was a natural fit.”

The Journey Ahead

In the next five to 10 years, Henry hopes to achieve enterprise status and would like to own multiple territories in Connecticut, eventually becoming the top total healthcare provider in the state. 

“I'm not reinventing the wheel, and I'm not out here on my own,” said Henry. “TruBlue has an affordable model, and they have a proven model with good leadership. We're a proven company that's been in business for a while – it’s a company with a purpose.”

For other people thinking about becoming a franchise owner, Henry’s advice is to “go for it.”

“Be ready to be your own boss, but you do have to follow some company guidelines,” noted Henry. “You have to have a good support system behind you. And yes, it costs a little more than doing it yourself. But we see that in the long run, and it's worth it.” 

TruBlue is actively seeking new franchise owners in markets across the country and has identified Orlando, Miami, Jacksonville and Naples, Florida, as well as Dallas and Austin, Texas, as key development markets.
