Twitter to Count Emoji as Equal Characters in Word Count

Every emoji on Twitter will now equal two characters, regardless of content or customization choices.

Twitter has announced that emoji’s will all have an equal and set character count. According to a recent article in Mashable, the social media platform has ruled them all as the equivalent of two characters within the 280-character limit, regardless of content.  This change will save users several characters that can be used for other content.

Previously, changing an emoji’s gender or skin tone meant using additional characters. If one were to change both features in a pre-set emoji, this would cost nine characters for a single emoji. With the help of Unicode, the platform can now offer consistency and allow all users to express themselves for an equal number of characters.
