Alabama export and recent Virginia transplant, Chris Kavanagh, 26, along with his father, Jim, is spearheading the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK*® brand in the Northeast U.S, but his history with the brand extends back to his sophomore year at the University of Alabama. During college in 2007, Chris began working at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® as a mover, supplementing his studies with a side job. After graduating in 2011 with a degree in psychology, Chris moved back to Huntsville, Ala. where his parents lived, and he continued working at the local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® office. Chris’s affinity for the brand and his extensive experience in all areas of the moving company was the catalyst behind his pursuit of ownership. In 2012, Chris flew out to Scottsdale, Ariz. to be an apprentice at the local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® to get practice for opening up his own location. Following his dream of ownership, Chris moved from Alabama to Virginia on November 1, 2013. “I definitely have a different perspective on ownership since I started at the bottom. I know all the jobs, and I understand the points of view people have while in those positions, allowing me to better manage them. While I may be young and straight out of college, I’m motivated and ready to work hard. I’m capable of making this territory successful for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®,” Chris Kavanagh said. The Kavanaghs are staying true to the family ties which comprise TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® (the company was started by brothers Brig Sorber and Jon Sorber and their mom, Mary Ellen Sheets). Tracy Kavanagh, Chris’s mom, will also be involved. She will be handling the bookkeeping, sales and payroll of the business. The math-minded mom has experience in bookkeeping and will ensure all operations run smoothly on the sales side. Chris also has two younger brothers (ages 19 and 17), who will be working at his locations during the summer months. “We work very well together as a family. I think having each other’s support will make us stronger and I think it will be better for business,” Chris Kavanagh noted. The Kavanagh’s TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® territory will have three trucks and a total of 15 employees to start, but have impressive growth goals of five trucks by the end of 2014.

How did you hear about the brand?

Chris: I first heard about the brand in 2007 in a newspaper advertisement looking to hire movers for $12 an hour. I was in college so I took the job and just ended up staying with the brand in a more professional manner.

Why did you choose an opportunity with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Chris: TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® was a great company to work for, both as a mover and now as a franchisee. I enjoyed the work and the responsibilities I had. I wanted to pursue something I could be successful at and owning a business was always the ultimate dream and goal.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Chris: Our ultimate goal is to open one or two more franchises in the area to operate.

What are your hobbies?

Chris: I love college football and I’m really into watching golf and participating in water sports. I grew up on a lake in Alabama and we’ve always had boats and jet skis. Naturally, I’m into wakeboarding and surfing because I’m so sports driven.
