For over a decade, Mario Restrepo worked in low-voltage security systems, card access technology and high-rise door operations, managing large-scale commercial installations across major metropolitan markets. While leading installation teams and overseeing complex building systems gave him a deep mastery of trade operations, Restrepo always knew he wanted to transition from managing someone else's company to building one of his own. Wanting to pivot to a path with "no dead ends,” he decided to step away from corporate limits to build a business where his hard work could directly drive his family's future and serve his local community.
To build that future, Restrepo chose franchising and invested in TruBlue Home Service Ally, the senior-focused handyman and home maintenance franchise. While he knew TruBlue offered an easy-to-follow system and strong operational documentation, what truly drew him in was the chance to lean into his natural ability to fix things. Guided by the philosophy that "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one," Restrepo recognized that local seniors didn't need a single-service specialist; they needed a dependable partner who could solve a wide variety of everyday home maintenance challenges.
Driven by a desire to plant roots in Florida near family and run a meaningful, service-based business, Restrepo is bringing TruBlue of Central Brevard to Space Coast homeowners and retirees to build a business rooted in honesty, decency and trust. Recognizing how vulnerable families feel when inviting someone into an aging parent's home, he set out to build a business culture centered on a simple promise: “put your guard down, we're trustworthy, don't worry about it, we got you.”
Restrepo sat down with 1851 Franchise to discuss his transition from commercial tech operations to business ownership and why building a culture of trust drives his long-term expansion plans in Florida. Here is what he had to say:
1851 Franchise: Tell us your story in one sentence.
Mario Restrepo: I spent years in low-voltage security systems and high-rise building operations before deciding to build my own business in Florida where I could combine my trade experience with a meaningful community impact.
1851: What was happening in your life that made you realize it was time to make a change?
Restrepo: A subconscious seed planted in my brain made me realize you're never going to build anything for yourself as long as you're working as an employee. I kept working as an employee, never really satisfied, and one day I turned 30 and said, "I'm not waiting anymore." I wanted to be my own boss, be in the trades and do something meaningful where you wake up and know you've fixed something for someone who really needed it and made a real impact.
1851: Why did you choose this franchise over every other opportunity?
Restrepo: At first, I dismissed it because I thought it was too broad a service offering, but I kept coming back because something about it attracted me. It's the meaning. That we help seniors age in place with dignity. It's so impactful to change someone's life by doing something that comes naturally to me: fixing things.
People say a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. That’s really what drew me in. Even if I'm not a master of one single thing, I'd still rather be able to solve many things for a family and not get in that sort of rabbit hole of a singular mindset.
The more we spoke with headquarters and other franchise owners as we did our due diligence, the more we liked the brand and saw how well it aligned with our goals.
1851: What is it really like owning a TruBlue franchise?
Restrepo: Opening a TruBlue has been smoother than I expected because of the availability of connections and people I can talk to and ask questions. Opening a business is hard. It's a lot easier than doing it on your own, but it's time-consuming and an emotional roller coaster. But getting on site, seeing my technician take care of clients and getting those notifications is very gratifying. You realize it was all worth it.
1851: How has owning this franchise changed your life?
Restrepo: Owning a TruBlue has put me on a path with endless opportunity and potential. I've pivoted to a road that has no dead ends, a vertical where I can go as far as I want to go, which is monumental for me because I hate feeling limited. It allows us to plant roots in Florida near family while building a structured enterprise that aligns with my values.
Beyond that, I want to build a specific culture here locally. What I love about this brand is that it portrays a culture of, "Put your guard down. We're trustworthy, don't worry about it, we got you." That signals so much to me because that’s just how I live my life. We're not trying to cheat anyone. Creating an enterprise where local families can have that peace of mind is what makes this so gratifying.
1851: If your best friend had enough money to buy this franchise tomorrow, what would you tell them?
Restrepo: Buy it. Start one. You can get it done.
1851: What's the one thing you wish someone had told you before you bought this franchise?
Restrepo: I wish I had known just how significant, impactful and critical it is to hire the correct staff. A good or bad team member can make or break your business. Getting into a long-term relationship with someone so soon for something that means so much to your family is something I had to learn quickly. As far as finding applicants, TruBlue's platform made it easy. I copied and pasted the job description, hit open and resumes were just flying in.
