No stranger to franchising, or wings, Irfan Mohammed is enjoying life as an early-thirties entrepreneur in San Antonio after opening his first Wing Zone franchise location this January. Mohammed was introduced to franchising early-on in his high school days working for Pizza Hut and Papa John’s, giving him his initial taste of the day-to-day business operations of a franchised restaurant. After obtaining his accounting degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and an administration degree from San Antonio College, he had backed his natural appreciation for numbers, sales and statistics with the knowledge to be able to manage them, and spent a little more than three years as the senior accountant for Buffalo Wild Wings –owned by multi-concept, multi-unit franchisees in the San Antonio market. During his time with his employers’ Buffalo Wild Wings franchises, Mohammed was exposed to the lucrative opportunities available as a business owner in the fast casual segment, given that he was the one crunching all the numbers on a daily basis. He witnessed first-hand the local empire his employers had built in just a few years, which started with them owning just one Little Caesars location initially. Inspired by his employers’ success with franchising and knowing his own level of comfort with wings as he had become very familiar with the food concept, Mohammed began shopping around for brands he could develop in San Antonio that would offer his neighbors something new and exciting. While people in the area were familiar with wings concepts including Buffalo Wild Wings and Wing Stop, the market lacked a wings place that offered delivery. As Mohammed looked further into the brand, he was immediately attracted to the commitment to bold flavor innovation as well as dedication to convenience for the customer. Not only did Wing Zone offer delivery; it was also well-established in offering online ordering, something that other competitors had only just begun to look at and roll out. In a centralized, walkable and visible location, Mohammed’s Wing Zone opened in January and he is enjoying the success of his first franchised business, as well as the freedom it allows him to further develop and mold his career as an entrepreneur. Now that his first location is up and running, he is open to the idea and willing to further expand, following a similar path to his former employers who offered such inspiration just a short time ago.
