Women Leaders in Franchising: Susan Boresow of TITLE Boxing Club

As president of TITLE Boxing Club, Susan Boresow is working to propel the brand forward one jab at a time

Susan Boresow has been fortunate to work with some of the most-recognized names in franchising including McDonald’s, Massage Envy, Sport Clips*, Cold Stone Creamery, Pump it Up and Godfather’s Pizza. Throughout her career she has been responsible for executing compelling marketing programs to drive both consumer brand awareness and franchisee recruitment. In 2015, Boresow was named president of TITLE Boxing Club, where she was tasked with developing the strategy to guide the direction and evolution of the brand, strengthen franchisee relationships, and evolve TITLE Boxing Club’s mission of health and wellness.

Most recently, we had the chance to catch up with Boresow to learn more about why she got into franchising, her secrets to great leadership and her advice for other women entrepreneurs.

How did you get your start in franchising?
I began my career in franchising with an entry-level position in marketing at McDonald’s back in 1985. I learned a great deal being on the grassroots floor with franchisees for 17 years with McDonald’s. Eventually, I oversaw the 28 company stores in Kansas City and I feel very fortunate to have begun my career in this industry with one of the world’s most iconic brands.
 
Who was your mentor in business?
I have been fortunate in my life to have several wonderful mentors and leaders. One longtime mentor has been Kevin Dunn, my former boss at McDonald’s. He eventually went on to become one of the zone presidents for McDonald’s and oversaw more than 3,000 stores in the U.S. Kevin inspired me personally and professionally in many ways. His leadership and support has always been there for me. He’s a great coach and his values are so authentic.

I also would like to add my parents to the list of the most influential people in my life and in business. I learned everything from them and not a day goes by that I am not influenced by what they taught me.
 
How would you describe your leadership style?
My style is pretty simple. I’ve always tried to remain down-to-earth and grounded. Franchising is such a collaborative business model so naturally my leadership style tends to gravitate towards connecting with people and working together to devise solutions that are scalable across a system. You have to take the time to build relationships, especially in this business. It may sound simple, but I’ve found that it’s the best way to lead.

What advice would you give to other women that are considering a career path in franchising?
Franchising is such a great space. I have spent my entire career in franchising and I have never ever looked back. Helping franchisees grow their businesses and increasing their profitability has been so fulfilling and rewarding. I have learned so much and cherish the deep relationships I’ve built with franchisees, colleagues, suppliers and agency partners throughout the years. I would say that if you enjoy learning and working shoulder to shoulder with franchisees, while providing guidance, leadership, and support—then you will enjoy the ride.
 
What would you like to achieve in the next five years?
Currently, as president of TITLE Boxing Club, I am thrilled about the opportunity that John Rotche, CEO of Franworth has given me. He is a visionary leader and inspires me to be the best leader I can be. I want to achieve outstanding results with our franchisees and grow their profitability, while supporting and leading an exceptional team at TITLE Boxing Club. I also am a believer in the brands I work with; so staying healthy and fit is important to me. The next five years are just beginning!
