For Teena Patel, a new franchisee with Woodhouse Spas in Boca Raton, Florida, entrepreneurship is about more than financial gain. While operating a profitable business is certainly a key goal, Patel has her fair share of experience in entrepreneurship, dating back to watching her father run his hotel businesses when she was a child. She knows how to run a business, and Woodhouse has given her the platform to do it with purpose.
“I grew up in an entrepreneurial household. My father came to America and purchased a hotel, and we lived there for our first four to five years here,” she said. “I was always there, so when he was having business conversations, I couldn’t help but listen and learn.”
Patel swore she’d never be a hotel owner because of how she saw her dad struggle, but when she came to a crossroads in her career as the newspaper industry began to decline and digital content started to take over, she decided to try something entrepreneurial.
Her first foray into entrepreneurship was with a flower shop. It was a hands-on, artistic business, which aligned with her skills. However, when flowers became something reserved almost exclusively for weddings, special events or deaths — not “just because” — she pivoted to Edible. Within two months of investing in her first Edible franchise, she signed an agreement for two more. Selling a few of these units equipped her with the capital needed to start a franchised day care center, and selling that gave her the capital necessary to start a hotel.
“I leveled up and bought a hotel, then another, and another. Now I have seven hotels,” she said. “I always said I didn’t want to be in the business, but maybe it was inevitable. I’ve always felt comfortable with franchises because I’m a planner. I like having steps to follow. And I’m good at looking at businesses, seeing where the gaps are and turning a profit.”
After coming in and turning a few hotel businesses around, Patel was ready to “level up” again.
“We sold a hotel for a good profit, and that’s what’s allowing us to level up to Woodhouse,” she said. “I call Woodhouse a level-up because, while my husband will be involved in the business, I feel like it’s my thing. This is something that gives me a sense of satisfaction and drives my own personal growth. As a mom and business owner, massages are my ‘me time.’ Woodhouse allows me to provide this for other women. And I don’t have to buy a whole hotel to bring the day spa experience to my area!”
Patel explained that one of the key things that drew her to Woodhouse, both as a guest and as a franchisee, is this day spa experience.
“I wanted something higher end. A lot of other franchises in the massage or wellness space don’t offer what Woodhouse does,” she said. “Some of these concepts are too transactional; the experience feels like you’re at a factory: you go in, get what you get and leave. Woodhouse has a very luxurious feel. There is a quiet room, and you can have a mimosa or some mixed nuts. That’s the experience I wanted to provide.”
Throughout her entrepreneurial career, Patel says her two greatest assets are communication and analysis. She’s learned how to clearly position a product or service as valuable and differentiated — a skill that has helped her connect with customers and stand out in competitive markets. Her analytical skills were shaped early, listening in on her father’s business conversations, and later sharpened through her own experiences as an owner.
“For anyone in my position, I feel like you have to take a look at how satisfied you are,” Patel said. “For me, I’ll probably always be working. Once I reach a goal, I’m ready for the next one. But it’s a very personal choice as to why people continue to work and why they choose the type of work they do. I chose Woodhouse because of the way it operates and the level and type of service it provides. It just works for me, and I knew this was the next ‘level-up’ that would bring me the fulfillment I was looking for.”
