Who says 3.14 isn't a piece of Pie? Pi Day is a day cherished by math aficionados around the globe. That’s why Mathnasium Learning Centers, the renowned math tutoring franchise with over 1,100 locations worldwide, encourages all of its franchise owners to celebrate Pi Day in their own unique ways.

Pi, known to many as simply the numeral figure 3.14, is actually one of math’s and nature’s great wonders. Pi (?) is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, which can be calculated to equal approximately 3.14. No matter the size of a circle — a pie, a tire or a Ferris wheel — do the math all you want, and you’ll always come up with pi. It’s so ancient and critical that the Babylonians and Egyptians (and maybe more early civilizations) understood this mathematical phenomenon.

Amazingly, pi is an infinite number of digits after the decimal point (meaning, it goes on forever). It's exact value can never be calculated, and it doesn't seem to have a pattern. Just 100 or so years ago, we knew 500 digits of pi (3.14 is the starting point). Today, according to Scientific American, in the digital age, “we now know more than the first six billion digits of pi.” (emphasis ours)

A Sweet Deal: National Sweepstakes and Discounts

As Mathnasium opens more centers across the country, the franchise company continues to focus on making math education accessible, enjoyable and impactful. This year, Mathnasium and Baskin-Robbins™ have teamed up with a new partnership and a national sweepstakes. This sweepstakes offers participants the chance to win a "pi-worthy" prize: a $3,140 educational scholarship* and a year's supply of free ice cream**.

In addition to the sweepstakes, families looking to join Mathnasium can enjoy a $314 discount on enrollment at participating locations until Sunday, March 31. Baskin-Robbins™ sweetens the deal with $2-off coupons for their delicious Polar Pizza®, available exclusively through the Baskin-Robbins™ app.

Participating Mathnasium Learning Centers across the nation will also host Pi Day parties on Thursday, March 14. These parties, free and open to the public, promise an engaging learning experience with activities designed to explore and visualize Pi, alongside memory games and Pi word searches. Participants can also indulge in Baskin-Robbins™ ice cream, including their signature Polar Pizza® treats.

All Pi Day events and discounts are opt-in for Mathnasium franchise owners.

A Passionate Advocate for Math Education

Kama Friedman, the franchisee behind 16 Mathnasium Learning Centers in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, has been an ardent supporter of Pi Day celebrations since joining the franchise in 2014.

"Math lovers know March 14th as the best day of the year,” said Friedman. “Of course, one of the best parts of the day is the party, but more importantly for us, children at a very young age go home with a new concept of what pi really means. It's not just a formula or a crazy number that some math teacher makes you memorize. It has a real function in the world.”

Under her guidance, her Mathnasium centers have embraced Pi Day with open arms, incorporating activities that make math both fun and educational. From measuring tennis balls to exploring circumference and diameter with tape measures, Friedman ensures that children grasp the concept of pi through hands-on activities.

"We always have fun — we want kids to take these concepts home and enjoy all our pi-themed treats," Friedman said. “Children often leave our Pi Day celebrations eager to share their experiences with their parents. It's a communal event where both kids and parents are welcome.”

Friedman's dedication to math education stems from her own love for the subject and a desire to prevent children from becoming disillusioned with math at an early age. Her approach to teaching math is about reigniting a passion for the subject, ensuring that today's students can become tomorrow's science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals.

“We advocate for children to engage with math at home alongside their parents, just like they do with reading,” said Friedman. “By introducing them to activities that incorporate math facts, multiplication and more advanced skills, we aim to show how math can be integrated into everyday life. Events like Pi Day are open to the community, and we encourage parents and community members to participate, so they can carry these valuable lessons home.”

A Vision for the Future

Through these celebrations, Mathnasium not only promotes math learning in a fun and interactive way but also strengthens its bond with the communities it serves, ensuring a brighter future for students everywhere.

"Too many children get frustrated with math from a very young age. We know not every child will fall in love with math, but it’s the mission of our entire team to reintroduce the excitement and passion for math,” said Friedman. “Our educational approach transcends mere memorization of formulas and test-taking; we aim to answer the 'whys' and 'hows,' ensuring students truly comprehend mathematical concepts. This is our daily commitment.”
