When Will Facebook be Available for the Apple Watch? Time Will Only Tell.

Some social networking apps aren't hopping on the Apple Watch bandwagon.

What time can we start checking our statuses on our wrists? Don’t ask the Apple Watch.

It’s been three months since the Apple Watch release almost broke the internet, and there is still no proposed timeline for when social apps such as Facebook will be offering a watch-friendly version. This is not for lack of trying, though, said Adam Mosseri, who oversees Facebook’s news feed told The New York Times.

“I don’t know if we could get it all in there in a way that feels good and works well,” he said. “You’d just want to get your phone out at that point.”

Social networking titans Snapchat and Google have also been dragging their feet to jump on board. At last count, only five of the 20 most popular free apps in the U.S. have Apple Watch-optimized versions, according to data from App Annie, an analytics firm. The New York Times also reported that the total number of watch apps, which currently sits at 7,400, is growing at a slower rate than its iPhone or iPad counterparts.

So why the hesitation from the social media cool kids table? This early in the game, reasons seem to span from just waiting to see who is buying the device and how it is used (Facebook), to finding the small screen just not that “compelling” (Snapchat).

“Why would you look at a small picture when you can look at a large one on your phone,” asked Evan Spiegel, Snapchat’s chief executive.

One capability for the current Apple Watch wearer is being able to check the forecast for the day. The Weather Channel, which introduced an app for the smartwatch in April, has played to the Watch’s capabilities by delivering real-time notifications and tracking conditions by pooling user weather confirmations.

Another guest that’s early to the party is Facebook-owned Instagram, who believes their model of social activity is conducive to what other applications might consider to be limitations.

“The Apple Watch allows us to make the Instagram experience even more intimate and in-the-moment,” Instagram said in a statement. “We’re excited about the launch of this platform.”

Despite the points of contention regarding the usability of the Apple Watch, initial data from the first wave of users seems prominently positive.

Perhaps both types of apps can coexist peacefully while the iPhone lives in one hand and the Apple Watch on the other. Would you buy an Apple Watch yet if you couldn’t use it for all your daily social needs? Tell us in the comments below!
