America’s Swimming Pool Co., the nation’s premier swimming pool cleaning, repair and renovation franchise, honored franchise owner Nick Carver with both the Multi-Unit Franchise Owner Award and the Best New Start Award at its annual Owners Convention and Awards Gala. Carver earned recognition for his leadership as a multi-unit owner, while his America’s Swimming Pool Co. location in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was recognized for its strong first-year performance.

Carver came to franchising with a technology background and years of corporate sales experience. He had long been interested in computers, even learning how to build them, and spent seven years in sales at Dell before becoming a franchisee. In 2017, he and his family moved from Tennessee to Florida to open their first America's Swimming Pool Co. location in Panama City. The location was one of 17 new America’s Swimming Pool Co. locations to open that year and earned the same Best New Start award that Carver later won for his Murfreesboro location.

When he moved back home to Tennessee to open Murfreesboro in 2025, he followed the same playbook from America’s Swimming Pool Co. that gave him so much success the first time around and broke a new first-year sales record.

“What's great about the America’s Swimming Pool Co. franchise is they already have the systems and the processes, and you just need to follow them,” Carver said. “That's part of it. But then another part of it is how hard you are willing to work for it. I just followed the same systems and tools we had set up at the Panama City location. And of course, in the nine years that I've been in the America’s Swimming Pool Co. system, I've learned a few other strategies.”

Taking What He Learned About Hiring to Murfreesboro

At the Murfreesboro location, Carver made a point of being thoughtful about who he hired. When he started out in Panama City, he was looking for people with industry experience, but that turned out not to always be the best fit.

“When you bring people like that in, you're not necessarily building upon your own values and the people that you want to be around in terms of culture and attitude,” Carver said. “When I finally learned that you could find those attributes in people and then just teach them the skills, I saw that you have a much better success rate in terms of retaining those employees and having longer tenure.”

That approach has helped Carver gain traction faster in Tennessee. He has also spent a lot of time getting processes and procedures in place, such as key performance indicators that measure the health of the business, and consistently reviewing them.

“It's almost like if you're a pilot in an airplane and you've got all your barometers in front of you, it tells you if you're going up in business or going down. And it's super important,” Carver said. “I think a lot of franchises miss that point. You have to do your monthly report and plug the numbers in and check on your business metrics and KPIs.”

Scaling Faster the Second Time

That deeper understanding of the numbers and stronger hiring decisions helped Carver’s Murfreesboro location ramp up faster than his first business. While his Panama City location took several years to reach strong profitability, his second location is on a quicker trajectory thanks to the experience he gained along the way.

“I would probably attribute that to my business acumen and just constantly learning, listening to podcasts, reading books, never letting up and always striving to learn more,” he said. “Great businesses are not built overnight. It takes time.”

Carver has also leaned more into technology to continue improving efficiency across his business. He is using the skills he learned in his previous career in technology to find ways to better leverage data to give his team a clearer view of performance.

“I'm working on integrating all of our tools into one single pane of glass,” Carver said. “And my management team is going to have visibility to this. They're going to be able to see their KPIs daily, how many maintenance accounts we've signed up, how many we’ve lost, our call reports, and how many positive and negative phone calls we've gotten.”

Building on Experience to Drive Results

Carver’s performance in Murfreesboro and experience in Panama City are what earned him both the the Multi-Unit Franchise Owner Award and the Best New Start Award at this year’s convention. Building on what he learned in Panama City and applying it with more discipline the second time around, he grew and set a new standard for first-year performance within the system.
