After years of being passed over for healthier protein options, such as turkey and chicken, beef is starting to become popular. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans will consume an estimated 54.3 pounds of beef this year - almost half a pound more per person than in 2015 and the first increase in a decade.

The price of beef has been increasing since the start of 2014, when U.S. cattle was at the lowest it as been in more than 60 years. Ranchers have been able to overcome this recently as the USDA reported cattle herds are at a five-year high. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found the price of a pound of uncooked ground beef in February was $4.38, a 7 percent year-over-year decline.

This drop in price has spurred a recent wave of discounts and special offers at restaurant chains. The popularity of protein-centric meal plans, such as the Paleo diet, is also contributing to beef’s comeback.

“Certainly there’s been a big push towards eating more meat and more meat proteins,” Altin Kalo, an analyst at Steiner Consulting Group, told Bloomberg. "Suddenly there is the extra supply of meat and you're going to somehow consume all of it."
