After losing her job, learning her brother had been diagnosed with cancer and moving her father to a memory care facility, a Minnesota woman was struck with the hardest blow of all — her mother passed away and she was faced with the overwhelming task of sifting through a lifetime of memories in her home. To top it off, a cherished wedding ring, a symbol of her mother’s love and life, was lost in the clutter.
Enter Caring Transitions, the nation's premier franchise providing relocation, estate sales and downsizing services. Ted and Suzanne Austin of Twin Cities Central have been Caring Transitions franchisees since 2021, bringing a compassionate approach to helping clients with such delicate situations.
“It’s really like moving mountains for people,” Suzanne said. “They just couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. They couldn’t imagine their way out of their situation and then we do it.”
The couple were brought on to help clean out the house of this client while helping to identify old belongings to sell on Caring Transitions’ online auction, CTBIDS, to offset costs.
When the Austins were told about the mother’s wedding ring, they understood the emotional gravity of the situation right away and immediately got to work. Several days of intense excavating went by and, just when they were about to give up hope, a Caring Transitions team member called Suzanne.
“He said, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but I just found the wedding ring.’ It was found inside a tool bin, in the shed next to the garage. Probably in their safe space,” Suzanne said.
Calling the client to fill them in on the good news, Suzanne says she was reminded of why she started a Caring Transitions franchise to begin with.
“She immediately burst into tears,” Suzanne said. “She told us that date, the moment we called her, was the one-year anniversary of her mother’s death. She had just been processing the day alone, processing not having her mother. To find such a treasure, that still gives us chills. It was amazing.”
As Caring Transitions continues to expand with over 300 locations, it is these stories that underscore the brand’s ethos. Every transition is an opportunity to touch lives deeply — a business model that resonates far beyond the physical aspects of the service. It's these moments, laden with emotions and humanity, that truly define the spirit of the Caring Transitions franchise opportunity.
“Our franchisees bring empathy, understanding and a personal touch to every task they undertake,” said Caring Transitions President Ray Fabik. “Finding this wedding ring wasn’t just about locating a lost item. It was about restoring a piece of a family’s heart, especially on such a significant day. This is the kind of impact we strive to make in people's lives.”
